About Us
The NKA Foundation is a nonprofit organization in the United States. NKA exists to serve undeserved communities. We do this by creating project sites where individuals, groups and institutions can interact with the undeserved communities to build cultural bridges for knowledge and skills transfer. NKA projects promote volunteerism, especially through the use of arts and design. NKA projects are developed and managed by volunteers dotted all over the globe.
Rural Ghana needs you. 98 percent of adults in Abetenim are unable to read or write due to the poor education infrastructure. The focus is on basic education of the younger generation. We want to achieve that in the next 10 to 15 years, the youth of today will be educated adult leaders in the community, who will in turn influence the upcoming generation. Take the Challenge. Be our volunteer!
Nursery, primary and junior secondary school placements are available. Volunteers are needed to teach one or two of the following school subjects
If you are motivated about changing lives of those growing up in poverty through education and innovative learning techniques, then this is the program for you. NKA Foundation program is open to university students, gap year persons, working professionals, retirees and mission trips. Learn by discovering what resources the community already has and by mobilizing those assets to meet the education needs in the rural school.
There is no typical day in Ghana. As a volunteer at a local school you will experience everyday a new day.
The program is available from December to January. Volunteers are welcome all year!
Immerse in the local culture and lifestyle. Live and work among the local people. Take part in some of the social events in the everyday life of the community, such as weddings, naming ceremonies, community labor, burial celebrations, meetings and gain new skills.
Go on an expedition to observe and photograph wildlife or waterfalls. There will be opportunities for day-trips to experience any of the regional attractions, lush forest hikes or mountain climbing as well as guided tours to explore the nearby villages.
Accommodation and food (lunch and dinner) for the duration of your stay.
It's a guesthouse at the arts village, which is less than a quarter of a mile from the school. Both the arts village and the school are in the village of Abetenim. The accommodation consists of one dormitory building that has a kitchen, and 8 cottage buildings for our guests. Most of the bathrooms are shared. Two of the cottages have a kitchen for self-catering. So, providing vegetarian options are possible. You can buy cabbage, lettuces, carrot, rice, beans and fruits in the local market.
There is also a Kitchen building that is for cooperative kitchen, where lunch&dinner can be prepared for international volunteers by our local cook. Our menu consists of both local meals and interntational foods. By cooperative kitchen, we imply that some of our international participants are encouraged to get involved in the planning, shopping and preparing of the dinner in line with their national cuisine. It has been more of a dinner party, a time to come together to sample national cuisine.
