Age 18+
Your First 12 Weeks:

During this initial training phase you will live and work with other interns at the base accommodation in Luang Prabang completing a training program, including a 150 hour online TEFL course and your ILM Endorsed Leadership Certificate Course. From Monday to Friday, for approximately 4-6 hours each day, interns will teach English to students ranging from 8-25 year old. Students’ levels vary from beginner to advanced and interns will teach a variety of topics including grammar, conversational English and subject-based English classes. As you progress through the internship, you can expect to be given greater responsibility in terms of overseeing lesson planning, taking on extra tasks that contribute to the running of the program and assisting staff in volunteer management. In the process you will gain knowledge and practical teaching and leadership experience, while becoming immersed in the culture of Laos.

Your Work Placement:

Through our collaboration with local partners, your work placement will include supporting language education in primary schools or English language centers in Luang Prabang or the surrounding area. These work placements offer the opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience.

Increasing Employability - Pre Departure Program Training:

Our programs are not only life-changing experiences but are also designed to help participants increase their employability. We have developed a curriculum to be completed prior to arrival in the country in order to ensure that more time is dedicated to program work once you commence your volunteer program.

Eight weeks prior to your start date, you will complete the following online courses in preparation for your in-country program:

  • LEADERSHIP COURSE (10 - 15 hours)
  • CAREERS COURSE (10 - 15 hours)

In order to obtain a certificate for the Wildlife Conservation, Leadership and Careers courses which are endorsed by the University of Richmond and UNC Charlotte, you will need to complete quizzes & assignments and will be given 4 weeks post program to submit your work.

If you are looking to travel in less than 8 weeks from now, you will still complete the course however this will be done in country and all content will need to be downloaded before arrival.

Health & Hygiene:

The work we contribute to across the globe remains important and new measures allow our participants to continue to join our programs and continue impacting positively on their world and the communities we work with. Changes to our existing protocols have been made by our health and hygiene team to strengthen our health and hygiene protocols and ensure that international standard safeguards are in place to protect our participants, staff and host communities. Please inquire for more information on the protocols.

Typical day

  • You will work on a teaching program for the volunteering phase (3 months). During this time you will teach English to a variety of students from different groups within the Luang Prabang community. This could be children, young adults or Novice Monks for approximately 4-6 hours each day whilst working in partnership with another volunteer or a local teacher.
  • After a successful 3 months, you will then move to a work placement. This may be in Luang Prabang working in the schools, teaching, and supporting new volunteers, or in a rural village teaching English at both a primary school and the English Language Center.
  • The details of project work may vary at any given time. During the school terms, participants may work with novice monks, or other children and young adults in the community. During the summer months, from approximately June to late August participants may also contribute to a range of summer programs for children and young adults. Laos also has many festivals and holidays. During these times the community might not be holding educational classes but participants will have the opportunity to get involved in local celebrations and other cultural activities.
