Your First 12 Weeks:

During this initial training phase, GVI teaching interns in Laos will live and work with other interns at the GVI base accommodation in Luang Prabang. Here they will complete a training program including the 150 hour online TEFL course and their ILM Endorsed Leadership Certificate Course. From Monday to Friday, for approximately 4-6 hours each day, interns will teach English to students ranging from 8-25 year old. Students’ levels vary from beginner to advanced and interns will teach a variety of topics including grammar, conversational English and subject-based English classes. As you progress through the internship, you can expect to be given greater responsibility in terms of overseeing lesson planning, taking on extra tasks that contribute to the running of the program and assisting the GVI staff in volunteer management. In the process they will gain knowledge and practical teaching and leadership experience, while becoming immersed in the culture of Laos.

Your Work Placement:

GVI collaborates with local partners in Luang Prabang and the surrounding area. Your work placement may include schools or language centers in Luang Prabang or the surrounding area, where you will support English language education. This might be at a primary school or an English Language Centre. These work placements offer the opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience.

Typical day

-  You will work on a teaching program for the volunteering phase (3 months). During this time you will be teaching English to a variety of students from different groups with the Luang Prabang community. This could be children, young adults or Novice Monks for approximately 4-6 hours each day whilst working in partnership with another volunteer or a local teacher.

- During this time, you will also take the GVI Leadership course and complete all related assessment, including running your own leadership day. Additionally, you will also receive one-one mentoring from a member of staff.

- After a successful 3 months, you will then move to a work placement. This may be in Luang Prabang still working in the schools, teaching, and supporting new volunteers or it may be in a rural village teaching English at both a primary school and English Center.

Free-time activities

You will be based a short walk from the centre of Luang Prabang and working at the temple or other learning facilities located in town. Travelling around the local area is easy and is best done by foot or bike. Bicycles are available locally for rent or sale but are up to you to arrange.

In your down time you will be free to travel in the local area and can expect weekends off. In this time you could visit nearby caves, local handicraft villages, waterfalls, or go for boat rides on the Mekong River. Tour companies are plentiful in Luang Prabang and weekend trips are easy to arrange in country. GVI staff can point you towards reliable companies. Before and after your program you could explore Laos culture and countryside. Visit the modern day capital of Vientiane, or go tubing and trekking in Vang Vieng. The possibilities are endless!
