As a student or volunteer, you will work in different departments in the hospital. The Trust Hospital Accra has different departments for men, women, children but also for patients who need emergency care and patients who only need help for one day and do not stay overnight in the hospital (the Out-Patients Department (OPD)).
However, as a student/volunteer you will choose between two different directions. 'General Medicine' is the direction in which we generally work together with the male ward, female ward, emergency departments, and OPD, while 'Mother & Child is the direction in the hospital that focuses on the pediatric ward, antenatal clinic and the maternity ward including the delivery rooms. Depending on the direction chosen by the student/volunteer, there will be different activities but the main focus is on support and health education.
Your shift will start at 7.30 am and usually closes around 2 pm.
When you're staying in Accra there are many places to visit for lunch, dinner or just a drink.
Visit the beach, go for some historical information about Accra during a walking tour in Jamestown etc.
During weekends Ghana offers you many hideouts like a weekend at the beautiful beaches in the Western region.
Explore the slave history in the Central Region. Go for some village immersions and hikes in the forest in the Volta region and many more places in the country to visit. We're partnering with a local eco-tours travel company called Jolinaiko Eco-tours which we can easily connect you to in case you'll like to know about possible tours and highlights in Ghana and neighboring countries.
