Visit one of the most beautiful locations in the world in beautiful Tropical North Queensland, Australia and be part of an exciting volunteer experience. Work along with a dedicated team at a wildlife park whose goal is to conserve and care for Australia’s native wildlife and ensure that visitors to the park have a grand experience. Have close encounters with platypus, echidna, possums, macropods, crocodiles, thousands of different species of birds and many more.

The project is located at a zoo about forty-five minutes from Cairns where the Great Barrier Reef meets the World Heritage Rainforest. This volunteer program gives volunteers the chance to work closely with the animal keepers in all their duties at the zoo and eventually the opportunity exists for volunteers themselves to be responsible for key tasks. Although the work can be physically demanding and strenuous, you will have an enjoyable time in Tropical North Queensland. Whether it’s preparing food for the wildlife, collecting and distributing leaves for Koalas or helping with the maintenance and cleaning of enclosures the time spent on this program will be memorable. There are amazing opportunities to explore this beautiful region of Australia during your days off. The program is extremely popular so it is recommended if you plan months in advance to secure a spot!

Typical day

As a volunteer at the project, you will become part of a dedicated team who aim is to conserve and care for the local wildlife and ensure that visitors to the park have an enjoyable time. At the project, you will work along with the animal keepers and be involved in several tasks. Keep in mind that the work can at times be physically demanding and strenuous. Some of your key tasks will include:

  • Preparation of food for native wildlife
  • Help to clean and maintain animal enclosures
  • Koala leaf collection and distribution
  • Upkeep of displays and exhibits
  • Animal handling
  • Plant identification and collecting
  • Caring for injured & orphaned animals and assist with record keeping duties under supervision.

Free-time activities

Volunteers have the opportunity to visit the beautiful beaches, the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree National Park for lots of sightseeing and other fun activities and In town, there are lines of boutique shops and restaurants. Please take into consideration that leisure time activities will be at the volunteers' expense.

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (intermediate level)
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 07:00 - 14:30

What's Included

Services by Fronteering Travel

The Fees include:

  • Accommodation - You will spend a night at a hostel in Cairns on arrival and departure and the rest of the time at a hostel in Port Douglas. Both accommodation will be a mixed dorm share: comfortable rooms, air-conditioning, modern facilities, self-catering kitchens.
  • Meals - You will be provided with two meals per day on work days. You are responsible for all other meals. There is a self-catering kitchen where you can prepare your own meals and food supplies are available to purchase nearby.
  • Airport Pick up & drop off - You will be picked up from Cairns Airport and taken to your accommodation in Cairns where you will spend one night. The next day, you will be transferred to the project.

Airport Pickup at Cairns Airport

You will arrive in beautiful Cairns where you will be met at the airport and transferred to a hostel to spend one night. The next day you will be transferred to your accommodation near the project.

Accommodation

As a wildlife volunteer, you will spend a night at a hostel in Cairns on your arrival and departure. For the rest of the time while you are on the program, you will be staying at another hostel close to the project. Your room will be a shared mixed room dorm at both locations. The rooms are comfortable with AC, modern facilities and a clean self-catering kitchen.

Food & Beverages

Two meals are included on work days. The hostel provides kitchen facilities so you can make your own meals on non-working days or any other meal you wish to prepare. No meal provisions are given. Food supplies will be available to purchase nearby.

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Cairns Airport (CNS) in Cairns. We assist you to find cheap flights to Australia.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Australia provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Australia you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Australia.

Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Fronteering Travel during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
