LAMAVE's turtle research and conservation projects will allow volunteers to study turtles in the water through photo identification and other research work. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 21+

LAMAVE is looking to conduct another turtle research and conservation project in the Philippines at a brand new site.

This pioneering project will use photo-identification as a minimally invasive technique to collect baseline data on the local turtle population. The project will also conduct other research methods to study turtle behaviour. Volunteers will get the chance to be in the water and observe these turtles in the wild. Thus, volunteers need to be confident swimmers.

By the end of your time here, you will be very knowledgeable in turtle biology and non-invasive research methods.

You will learn how to do turtle photo identification, recording behavioral observations, and collection of genetic samples, as well as how to work in a multicultural team in a remote and exotic location.

Typical day

The team works everyday, with two days every two weeks. Days off are on a rotation schedule.

An average day starts at 6:00 am and work generally finishes by 8:00 pm, or once tasks are complete. Weather dependent, you will be in the water 4 days and on land 2 days a week.

During an average day you will conduct 3 in-water surveys, meaning you will be in the water for approximately 3 hours a day.

The project has a 9:00 PM curfew for all volunteers to ensure safety, rest and recovery.

Free-time activities

On days off and other free time, volunteers can see the sights around the project area and experience Philippine culture. You can go diving, snorkeling, hiking, swimming, and more.

What's Included

Services by LAMAVE Research Institute

The fees are a required donation to support the long-term running of the project site and your place within the team during your stay.

The project house is usually a communal, shared living space. All team members are required to stay at the project house throughout their stay, this is for health and safety and for team work purposes.

There is often a kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, a communal space and an outside area for relaxing. Beds are within shared bedrooms and each volunteer will be given space for their personal items.

The project house uses fans, and not air conditioning. Amenities are basic but comfortable, and the house often has the character of a research base. All volunteers are expected to share the daily chores (i.e. shopping, cooking, washing dishes, filling up the water tank, locking up at night).

Food & Beverages
The project has funds for groceries. The project members have to cook meals together. Drinking water is also provided.
Internet Access
Good access at the project site
What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Dumaguete Airport (DGT) in Dumaguete. We assist you to find cheap flights to Philippines.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Philippines provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Philippines you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Philippines.
