Existing for over a decade, this organization is working in a variety of projects. At (primary) schools children and teachers learn about
and get assistance with the construction and maintenance of vegetable gardens. Depending on the space and the availability of water,
the schools sometimes have rather small gardens that serve primarily to practice and not so much to produce a lot of vegetables and
sometimes they do not go beyond making a salad with the classes once. At the families’ homes, the square foot gardening method is
used in garden tubs of 1.20 m x 1.20 m. The organization visits people's homes and supports them with gardening. The organization
works in other related topics such as healthy food, composting, fruit trees and there is a huge variety of projects to get involved in, but
expect to get your hands dirty. There is a great need for hard workers, volunteers and interns who can take initiative and responsibility
and are willing to work independently after a while. Together with the project, you will possibly develop your own assignment and little
project. Reasonable Spanish and a minimum stay of 2 months is required to start here.
Possible tasks:
You might take Spanish classes from 8:30 - 12:30. You have to take a trufi - you will learn about that - to get to the school. After lunch you meet with a colleague at a school where you plan with a class a school garden. You explain to them what they can grow and educate them about the importance of local food supply.
In the afternoon you visit on of the families that already started building their own little garden. You bring organic fertilizer
and seed and show them how to plant the vegetables. If not having
Spanish classes you might be in a school helping with a project on
reforestation, planting seedlings with them and give a speech on the
importance of sustainable agorforests.
If
you want and there is still some energy left, you work the photos you
took earlier to post something about your work on the projects Facebook page. Other volunteers of the house come in from their work and you decide all together to go out for dinner in one of the many nearby restaurants, because you are all way to tired to cook. :D
