Focus on HIV/Aids
Care for Mother & Child
Community outreaches
For medical, nursing and social work students/ volunteers
West African Aids Foundation (WAAF) is is an outpatientclinic that has been focusing on counselling and guiding people with HIV/Aids This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Since January 2018 You & Ghana has been an official partner of WAAF. Next to counseling and guiding people with HIV/Aids, WAAF goes on outreach to test and inform people about HIV/Aids within large companies, but also in the remote villages. Meanwhile, it is not only HIV that WAAF focuses on. They also focus on tuberculosis, because this often occurs in combination with HIV/ Aids.

At WAAF you will work together with the nurse or doctor at the clinic and during outreaches. WAAF has various projects aimed at specific target groups, for example, the Prevent Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) where pregnant women are closely monitored during their pregnancy. Think of i.e. starting the medication on time, so that there is a good chance that the child will enter this world healthy.

WAAF is also our partner in doing the You & Ghana - Safe Motherhood outreaches where you will give information about Safe Birth, PMTCT and family planning in communities, at markets, and at health clinics around the WAAF offices in Accra and Sunyani.

Typical day

Your working day will be average from 8 am till 3 pm, so you can travel to the clinic from the house by daylight.
On a day at the clinic, you'll join the nurse or doctor and your shift will start with a small meeting to discuss the daily program

and patients. You'll be seeing patients for the general OPD even as people with HIV coming for routine check-ups and new medications.
When desired you can join the doctor when she's seeing new HIV patients and follow the counseling session around it.

Other days you won't go to the office but you'll find your self in a village, hospital or market going for an outreach program where you'll provide health education on Safe Motherhood, HIV/TB and Malaria. Free testing is often included.

You'll can also join several support groups like one for mothers with HIV, one for youth (and their parents) living with HIV and last but not least the MSM (men having sex with men) group.

In general, you won't find any day the same at WAAF.
We'll connect you to the projects and support groups based on your interests and experiences.

Free-time activities

When you're staying in Accra there are many places to visit for lunch, dinner or just a drink.
