Center for wildlife conservation through volunteering, internships and tourism
Macas Ecuador This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

The international internship and volunteering program of Los Jaguares Rescue Center aims at the integral formation and training of national or travelers, students to work with us in activities,  related to conservation, education, and social development, such as:

Diverse and specific preparation of diets depending on the necessities of each one of our rescued animals.  

Time charge

This activity is vital for the rescue center because it allows interactions between the wildlife and our volunteers.  

20 hours will be employed in the activity.

  • Environmental education 

Accompany and guide students of public schools from Macas town in different activities, such as Educational talks about care and protection  of wild animals and ecological cycles of their environment.  

Time charge

10 hours distributed  between guiding act and educational talks

  • Wildlife care 

Maintenance of wildlife environments and cages,  cleaning of birds drinking pots, animal feeders, and monitoring of their health and mood. 

Time charge

20 hours estimating that the cleaning and monitoring is done in one hour per day.

  • Paths maintenance 

Maintenance of paths at the rescue center that improves the experience and stay of visitors. 

Time charge

We estimate that in 20 days 8 hours will be dedicated to the maintenance of paths.


  • Monitoring of Sangay National Park

Assist the Ministry of Environment in their activities of monitoring and control of Sangay National Park. 

Time charge

20 hours that would be in charge by the operators of the Ministry of Environment. 

  • Seedlings Production 

Production of native seedlings such as Wild Grape trees or Guadua cane. 

Time charge

The seedlings production allows us to create projects of reforestation. In this activity, we might employ 20 hours distributed among 10 days. 

  • Cultural and linguistic exchange

Cultural exchange with foreign volunteers in Spanish and English or vice versa.   

This activity allows bonding and friendships among visitors from all over the world. The activity focuses on sharing experiences and culture between our visitors and local students, improving their language and communication skills. This activity does not have any schedule.  


Typical day

All of these activities will be accomplished in a minimum of a 100 hours, distributed in a 5 hours a day.
The center will deliver certificates of participation from the Ministry of Environment of Morona Santiago province, certificates of internships and philanthropic labor at Los Jaguares Rescue Center. All of them endorsed by the participating institutions. 

Proposed schedule of activities 
From Monday to Friday:

  • 7:30-9:00 – Wildlife care and feeding
  • 9:00-10:00- Breakfast
  • 10:00-11:30 – Maintenance
  • 11:45-1:00 - Environmental education
  • 1:30-2:00- Lunch
  • 2:00-15:00 - break
  • 15:00-16:30 – Seedlings production and reforestation  
  • 16:30 - Free time
  • 19:00 - Diner

Free-time activities

Macas has plenty of touristic places to visit, and activities to do in the volunteer free time.

Macas despite has plenty of touristic places to visit, and activities to do in the volunteer free time of being very safe for the tourist who visit the city, having some bars well prepared to receive the visitors. Also places as Yantza waterfalls in shuar community, Laverintos del Chiguaza an natural maze in the banks of Pastaza River.

Sangay national park: A protected area that contains three magnificent volcanoes, Sangay,

Tungurahua and Altar. Going from the high Andes all the way down to the Amazon basin.

El Pailón:  It is a rock formation that creates a natural pool with a beautiful scenery.

The labyrinths of Chiguaza: Natural rocks that formed labyrinths, caves, stalactites and stalagmites.

Chuwitayo Caves: Refugee of birds and bats.

Macuma Waterfalls: It is an adventure to get to this waterfalls, it requires a guide to get to this tropical paradise.

Negra Lake and Hot springs El Placer: Posible to visit by car this place has an Andean surrounding landscape.

Cugushua Waterfall: beautiful tropical lookout.   

Tayos Cave: Icredible cave wich its total extention is yet unknown.

Binational Park El Condor: A natural reserve that contains its own mountain chain, older than the Andes raising in the middle of the rainforest. Made to solidify the bonds between Ecuador and Peru.  

Or in the weekends visit in two hours the city of Baños were the volunteer can visit the well know tree colupio del fin del mundo and make extreme sport as rafting, bungie jumping or more, but also would visit going to the south of Ecuador at Cuenca city one of the most beautiful cities in Ecuador.

Water Sports


In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 07:30 - 16:30

Are individual beds and bunk beds located inside of the main house in the rescue center. With pirvate bathroom, ventilation  and electricity for two or five volunteer at time.

Food & Beverages

The program includes three meals, and two lunch, also unlimited no alcoholic drinks, and if the volunteer require, vegetarian meals.

If the volunteer have dietetic restrictions provide the info at the coordinator before his arrival.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Macas (XMS) in Macas. We assist you to find cheap flights to Ecuador.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Ecuador provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Ecuador you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Ecuador.

Details on arrival

The only requirement is to send a motivation letter how specific names, studies, and expectations, also if have some health or food specifications.

In the details of arrival, 
Take a bus from Quito or Guayaquil to Macas, in preference by night although exist two buses more in the morning. The time of travel is 6 or 7 hours. At the arrival of Macas city, the best option is to take a taxi to Rancho Fatima ( all taxydrives know the place) don't pay more than 4 USD.
It is advisable, call to the coordinator program if the volunteer needs to be picked up at the bus station.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Los Jaguares Rescue Center during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
