Age 18+
Singles
Couples
By supporting English education for girls and women in Laos, you will not only promoting United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UN SDGs, #4, Quality Education and #8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, but also UN SDG, #5, Gender Equality. When women have better access to education, they are able to gain more employment opportunities, which not only benefits themselves and their families, but contributes to overall economic growth.

All our projects around the world, including our women’s empowerment project in Laos, are based on the needs of the local community. This allows us to ensure that we are truly contributing to long-term local capacity building in line with sustainable development best practices. However, it also means that we require volunteers to be flexible as exact project details change over time, depending on the objectives of the community. You might conduct practical and conversational English classes with large groups or one-on-one lessons, for students of different ages and levels, or health and life skills workshops. This program allows you to not only immerse yourself in the diverse cultures of Laos, including Theravada Buddhism, but also how concepts of gender function in this Southeast Asian society and how it is evolving over time.

Women’s empowerment volunteers in Laos will work on gender equality programs from Monday to Friday, but during the weekends will have free time to relax with fellow volunteers and interns at the GVI base in Luang Prabang or explore the surrounding area. You might visit the many Buddhist temples in the city, go on a Mekong river cruise, or swim in the Kuang Si Waterfalls.

Typical day

- The work schedule is slightly flexible and can change at very short notice.

- Volunteers generally teach or hold workshops anywhere between 2-4 hours per day in addition to lesson/workshop planning time.

- Usually there is a morning class from about 8 am-11 am, a break then possibly an afternoon class, and usually evening classes until 8:00 or 8:30 pm.

- Volunteers will participate in several hours of lesson planning daily.

Free-time activities

You will be based a short walk from the centre of Luang Prabang and working at the temple or other learning facilities located in town. Travelling around the local area is easy and is best done by foot or bike. Bicycles are available locally for rent or sale but are up to you to arrange.

In your down time you will be free to travel in the local area and can expect weekends off. In this time you could visit nearby caves, local handicraft villages, waterfalls, or go for boat rides on the Mekong River. Tour companies are plentiful in Luang Prabang and weekend trips are easy to arrange in country. GVI staff can point you towards reliable companies. Before and after your program you could explore Laos culture and countryside. Visit the modern day capital of Vientiane, or go tubing and trekking in Vang Vieng. The possibilities are endless!
