About the program

Come to El Salvador for a minimum of three months and work with our Women's Small business program.

Each year, we do evaluations of business who receive support from our program, making the months June, July and August the best times to come, but we accept volunteers all year round.

The Women's Small business program accompanies groups of organized women who want to participate in an economic initiative to better their lives.  The program includes workshops on self esteem, organization, business administration and accompanies businesses for up to seven years, at which point businesses should be self-sustainable and ready to work on their own.  The CIS works together with their counterparts SEW (Salvadoran Enterprises for Women) in businesses such as bakeries, Hen Farms, Convenience stores, and Indigo Farming Initiatives.

Volunteers will travel to rural areas of El Salvador with CIS staff to attend meetings, workshops and other events.  Volunteers will document their work, participate in business evaluations, translate material for donors and can suggest a work plan which takes advantage of the specialized strength of each volunteer.  We try to be flexible with volunteers in order to make sure each person gets to contribute in the most meaningful and helpful way they can.

The CIS is an organization with over 22 years of experience with different solidarity projects in El Salvador.  We promote solidarity and empowerment.

In the US, I teach English to adult immigrants in a couple of settings. One is at a community college, where the context is academic ESL. The other is at a community agency where the focus of the curriculum is survival/acculturation. I was looking for a way to try teaching abroad, and my preference ...
