The children’s homes in Huancayo are a temporary place to live for children and adolescents who can’t live with their families for various reasons. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

As a volunteer for this project, you will work with children from impoverished families. You will support a children's home and help orphans to rehabilitate from their traumatic past, giving them confidence and skills they need to have for a brighter future. Working with these children will give you an insight into the problematic situation of poor families in Peru who live on the margins of society and struggle for survival every day. A great deal of empathy and sensitivity is therefore particularly in demand when it comes to rehabilitating children, gaining their trust and integrating them into society.

The orphanages are staffed by specialized people who provide comprehensive care and education for children and adolescents between 5 and 18 years old. The aim of the facilities is to help the children in dealing with the often terrible experiences in their family and to give them a positive future perspective through good education and a safe home.

Since the care of so many children and adolecents is very labor-intensive, the help of volunteers is necessary. Supporting this volunteer project in Peru is meaningful and you can make a real difference in the children's life.

Typical day

Volunteers should be sensitive and have fun working with children and adolescents. The proactive interaction with the children is the top priority. Keep in mind that you have a role model for the often traumatized adolescents.

On a typical work day, your tasks will include helping the workers caring for the children, assisting with activities that stimulate intellectual and social development, organizing and participating in games, helping with homework, and teaching subjects such as English and art.

No previous experience or special skills are required to participate in this project, however, volunteers need to have patience and a positive attitude. It is also very important that you can work independently and show initiative because these centers are usually understaffed, and you will be working without regular supervision.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

Free-time activities

In your spare time, there is a wide range of activities to choose from, such as playing soccer and other sports in the local community. Most volunteers choose to spend their free time exploring the city and taking in its rich culture. There also are bars nearby where you can go to socialize.

Still an insider tip, Huancayo has become one of the tourist attractions of Peru and has cemented an image of tranquility, community and progress of life well valued by visitors. In Huancaya and surroundings you have lots of options to spend an excellent day off your volunteer work. There are tourist places for any type of trip, whether cultural, fun, family, to relax or sports. Don't miss out on to try typical foods, buy souvenirs or stay on the banks of the river next to lagoons and waterfalls, in the middle of breathtaking landscapes.
