Help contribute to educational projects in the Cambodian province of Kampong Cham. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Lead a range of English language classes to increase educational and professional opportunities for youth in Siam Reap, a town six hours from Cambodia’s capital of Phnom Penh.

By contributing toward local access to education, you will also be furthering the progress of UN SDG #5, Gender Equality, and #8, Decent Work and Economic Growth.  By conducting a research project based on an international development project of your interest, you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to other UN SDGs like #3, Good Health and Well-being, and #12, Responsible Consumption and Production.

You will have a busy day-to-day, and can expect a full day of teaching, planning, and preparing for lessons and workshops, as well as a minimum of one hour training each week.

Our interns live and work with GVI staff and other volunteers in the community of Siem Reap, a bustling riverside town with a relaxed, friendly charm. Expect busy days, including full days of teaching, planning and preparing for lessons and workshops, as well as a minimum of one hour training each week. You will work anywhere from pagodas, in which local Buddhist monks are taught, to the drop-in educational facility in town, to our own classrooms. On the weekends, explore the surrounding area including the ever-popular Angkor Wat travel to the islands, or to Phnom Penh to see the royal palace.

This program includes the ILM Endorsed Leadership program, designed to develop your leadership skills and put you a step above other candidates. This program will be completed during your first 12 weeks on the base with GVI staff and other participants. Each week you will learn about a specific concept related to leadership and teamwork and complete an assignment on the topic. You will be guided through the process by your assigned mentor on base. At the end of the course, successful candidates will receive a certificate and personal recommendation.

Typical day

- Mondays to Fridays will be spent working with some of the most marginalized members of the Siam Reap community and supporting them to learn English.

- Depending on which classes you teach, you may work with children from local villages, young adults hoping to better their employment through learning English or local businesses hoping to improve the skills of their staff members. You may work with our younger children to teach them basic English, play games or run arts and crafts activities.

- You may also support our music and dance center by working with students to explore their creative talents, organise sports events to encourage a healthy lifestyle, or put on workshops for your students and their families on hot topics such as Hygiene and Health.

- The exact projects that we get involved in will depend on the needs of the community at that exact time, and as such, participants should be prepared to be flexible and adapt to changes in the field.

Free-time activities

We are centrally located in a guesthouse, overlooking the grand Mekong River, allowing you easy access to all that the town has to offer. Experience Cambodian life first hand, as you watch the goings on from your window. In the evening you can relax at the GVI base and hang out with other like minded GVI volunteers, interns, and staff members, or explore the vibrant night markets, restaurants, shops and riverside stalls of Siem Reap.

If you can travel further afield visit the capital city of Phnom Penh to enjoy the electric atmosphere of the bustling riverside, visit the sprawling markets or immerse yourself in the history of the Khmer Rouge with its sights and museums. Travel south down to the many spectacular islands off the Southern tip of Cambodia where you can spend the weekend island hoping to enjoy the stunning beaches, trek through uninhabited jungle or practice your snorkeling and explore the underwater world. Travel north and you will find the 12th century temple ruins from the Khmer Empire, the famous Angkor Wat.
