Age 17+

Join Love Volunteers in supporting the disempowered youth of Chicago and be part of the long term solution.

This program focuses on the in-need youth of Chicago; those kids who struggle day-to-day with a lack of support and resources. Schools often aren't provided with sufficient funding and resources to cater for all young people's needs and families and communities are often unable to provide sufficient after-school opportunities and safe spaces for children and teens. This program works with local community organizations on projects which bridge these gaps, providing young people with positive experiences from which to learn and grow and thrive.

This program is perfect for volunteers with a passion for education and youth mentoring. Working with a range of projects ensures there is scope to match volunteer skill-sets with community needs to achieve a rewarding outcome for all.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide support to schools, educational facilities and after-school programs
  • Improve the prospects of US children trapped in the poverty cycle
  • Encourage young people to continue in education
  • Enable exchange between volunteers and communities that cross cultural, religious and socio-economic barriers

How you can help

Volunteers provide much-needed labor on essential projects working to improve access to educational resources and provide safe spaces for disadvantaged youth. Participants on this program should have a 'can-do' attitude and a passion for improving the life and prospects of American children and teens.

As the program works with a variety of community organizations, volunteers will be paired with the project that has the greatest need and which most closely aligns with their skill-sets. This ensures that the work our volunteers undertake is both meaningful and beneficial to the communities they serve and worthwhile and rewarding for the volunteer themselves.

Volunteer work will vary depending on the projects being undertaken at the time of placement and may be within public schools, community centers, summer camps, playgrounds or after-school programs. Volunteers can expect to be involved in activities such as:

  • Assisting with educational and after-school programming
  • Helping to organize, manage and develop resources
  • Beautifying and maintaining safe spaces and public schools
  • Tutoring children and teens

Typical day

Volunteers on this program can expect to work for around 3 - 5 hours per day, 4 or 5 days a week, typically Monday through Friday. When not volunteering participants are free to enjoy this cultural city!

Volunteer schedules depend on the needs of the organization at the time of the placement but a typical day is likely to look something like this:

7:00am Breakfast at the Hostel

8:15am Travel to the project site

8:45am Pre-start meeting with the program coordinator

Lunch is taken at midday at an eatery near to the project site

Exact finishing times will depend on the specific project.

2:15pm De-brief with the project coordinator

Afternoons and evenings are free to relax and explore the many activities on offer in Chicago City.

Free-time activities

Chicago is culture, cuisine and seriously cool!

Lying on the shores of Lake Michigan the city is washed by breezes (often gusts!) which help to propel visitors from one sight and experience to the next.  There is just so much to see, do and taste in this city!

Chicago is well known for its incredible cuisine so you'll need to do some walking to ease the belt buckles!  That's not a problem when there's so much amazing architecture to enjoy, either in passing or up-close and personal, and great beaches and parks in which to get active - or to relax.

With a massive population of close to 3 million, Chicago attracts serious sporting and musical talent so it's very likely that your visit will coincide with entertainment of either variety to enjoy during your free time.

What an incredible location in which to be based as a Love Volunteer!
