Problem:
Illegal wildlife trading is a big problem in Peru. The country is extremely biologically diverse, but its enforcement of wildlife trading laws is unfortunately weak, creating the perfect market for traffickers. Rare, endangered and native animal species are regularly smuggled out of the Amazon rainforest and sold: Capuchin, spider and howler monkeys, parrots, tapirs, sloths, armadillos, caimans, boas, anacondas and turtles. During this traumatic experience, the animals are locked in extremely small cages, fed badly and kept close to other species creating stress and allowing the spread of diseases.
Solution:
An indigenous Harakmbut family runs a rescue and rehabilitation center within the biosphere of Manu National Park, declared a world heritage culture site by UNESCO in 1978. They provide shelter, food and care for animals affected by wildlife traffic in their natural environment. They receive veterinary care and are rehabilitated to be then released back into the wild if they are strong enough to survive. This project has no public funding to support it, so they urgently request international assistance in the form of volunteers.
Come and join us to:
- Monitor the health and general well-being of animals at the shelter.
- Prepare natural habitat areas for the animals; construction, planting, and path-clearing.
- Prepare and distribute the animals' food.
- Assist with the construction of different structures, work in the garden, and help keep the shelter clean.
- Act as a guide for shelter visitors; tell them about the animals and explain the project's objectives.
- Collect and maintain data on animal numbers.
- Perform bookkeeping tasks regarding donations made to the project and micro-finance initiatives, and research fundraising opportunities.
- Provide educational opportunities to help the local community learn about the rescue and preservation of endangered species.
- Project monitoring and reporting.
Whilst in the Amazon Rainforest, you can visit surrounding villages and tribes, find secret jungle trails hidden from tourists or go on a night jungle excursion, to discover the thousands of different species that live by night. Or why not pitch up your tent and enjoy a night with a campfire by the shores of the majestic Amazon River?
When you arrive in Cusco, there is plenty to do as well: Hiking in the Andes, downhill mountain climbing, rafting, paragliding, and horseriding are on top of our list. You can also learn how to dance salsa, attend a local cooking class, stroll through the city, or book a guided tour. And don't forget to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Machu Picchu!
Airport pick-up is included.
You will be sharing one of the two bedrooms for volunteers, each with three beds. There are some spare mosquito nets but it is recommended to bring your own. Fresh linen will be provided for you, but you need to bring your own towel. There is a shared bathroom with a toilet and a shower.
