À propos du programme

Are you interested in an international developmental project working with a rural school? Are you good with kids and youth? Do you want yourself experiencing a new cultural vibe? If yes is your answer, then this is the right place to come to.

KARIBU SANA!! (SWAHILI FOR MOST WELCOME)

Introduction –

Vision Academy was started under a cashew tree at a village township called Bamburi in Majenge Kanamai Location, approximately 2-3 hours from the airport. It was established in the May of 2006 with the sole purpose of educating the poor and the needy rural kids and also establishing a holistic form of education. Additionally, the unemployed people around also get a chance to work in the school and be the bread-earners of their families.

Soon, the town developed little by little but the concept of education and schooling is still outdated in most areas with some institutes surviving barely with minimal electricity or such other basic resources.

Soon the schools and other childcare projects independently joined hands with each other to sustain and develop newer ideas for growth and technological progress.

Background Information –

The founder, Mr. Sylvester Kalenga, came across a lot of poor and needy children in the neighborhood communities. In the absence of due educational support by the government, he decided to start off a primary school with a few children and soon it grew in numbers. It was his high school dream to provide for the community as things have drastically changed in the modern world. Previously a hotelier by profession, he has ample experience in dealing with tourists and visitors which is where he knows the environmental impact of cross-cultural exchange which can bring a new dimension to the educational system.

Post-Pandemic era –

The school is set in the rural background of a distant county. Through sustainable collaboration from the parents and unofficial aid from other schools and sponsors during the curfew, the school somehow managed to wither the storm. Although it’s still standing on paper, the financial damage really hampered the school’s upliftment progress. What appeals to the eye is the joint effort of the staff to keep the kids well-fed and happy despite a massive budget crunch. Hence, the call for help is to provide a silver lining for the much-awaited educational and basic needs support.

Current structure –

The school has two system of Education:

  1. C B C
  2. 8-4-4

 Facilities in the school:

We have 10 class rooms, 2 toilets, 1 small kitchen and a well.

Mission –

  1. To provide basic education to the needy and poor kids.
  2. To teach the people new ways of sustainability in the absence of long-term standing careers.
  3. To teach the surrounding communities about Afro-Western collaboration and bring about a change in the traditional concept.
  4. To help grow the school into a standing symbol for holistic education through digitization.
  5. To promote and realize the values of cross-cultural exchange amongst the locals, to inspire respect, accord and help foreigners learn the beauty of Kenyan culture.

Aim –

The main aim of this project is to provide educational resources such as books, clothes, etcetera for the school children, besides helping out in renovating the school.

We are looking for volunteers for the following agenda:

  1. Fundraising assistance.
  2. Resources support like buying stationery items, digitization tools, clothing for the kids.
  3. Engaging the staff in student-friendly pedagogy and assisting them in better ways of learning.
  4. Engaging in art and craft activities.
  5. Vlogging on the school’s situation and background, if possible.

An enriching CV and a memorable journey that helps you grow further both in career and life.

Journée typique

First Day: On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your accommodation by a local coordinator/staff member and allowed to relax and rest.

Following that, you will meet the organizational hierarchy who will explain the work and the ongoing projects to be done. Please ensure to inform the admin/contact person about the flight ETA and other details, as and when required, prior to the journey. This would avoid any unnecessary loss of time by waiting at the airport.

A typical volunteer day would be as follows:

  • 8.30 AM: Volunteer leaves for the project destination. The volunteer joins with the local staff and will be oriented about the work to be done.
  • 12.00 PM – 2.00 PM: Lunch break. During this lunch break, you are welcome to eat out or eat at the accommodation.
  • 2.00 PM - 4.00 PM: Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to travel around and explore or do anything at his/her own choice.
  • 7.00 PM: Dinner in the accommodations.

Usual work days are Monday to Friday.

Saturdays and Sundays are off-work days.

Kenya has a considerable land area devoted to wildlife habitats, including the Masai Mara, where blue wildebeest and other bovids participate in large-scale annual migration.

The “Big five” game animals of Africa (lion, leopard, buffalo, Rhinoceros and elephants) can be found in the Masai Mara in particular.

The annual animal migration occurs between June and September, with millions of animals taking part, attracting valuable foreign tourism.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION -

We do understand that some volunteers may not be able to spend as much so it is better that they discuss with the management prior to arranging a stay. In the times of the pandemic, empathy is a route to better communication and compassion. Although the money is directly invested for the provisions of the volunteers and the children and the caregivers, what we need in exchange for a budget compromise is your love, energy and ideas that can suit our betterment. Surely, some sort of arrangement can be made.

Logement

Volunteers have the option to stay in the school or a nearby pre-arranged guesthouse, where you can expect to share a room with other volunteers. Usually, the school doesn’t have much facilities but can be arranged with a ground carpet/mattress. The better and more suitable option is the guesthouse where volunteers have their own apartment with most of the facilities including the Wi-Fi.

The volunteer house is located in Mwtapa itself, 2 minutes from the project site. There are provisions of electricity and running water; Along with a swimming pool which they are free to use during their stay. However, the Pricing might go a little higher based on the usage of such commodities.

Volunteers are accommodated in a volunteer house, where you can expect to share a room with three to seven other volunteers. Bedrooms are comprised of bunk beds with bedding provided, which includes a bedding, blanket and pillow.

The volunteer house has electricity and running water.

Aliments & Boissons

Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast and dinner), which are served at the accommodation. However, in case of lunch, it may be at one’s own expense or sometimes shared with the school staff. Not to worry, a proper local lunch usually costs no more than 1.5-2 euros.

Breakfast is served around 7-8 am and generally consists of chai (tea), toast, fruit and sometimes mandazi (African donuts). A typical lunch can include vegetables with rice, occasional meat and fruit and is served around 1-2 pm. Dinner is usually served around 7-8 pm and usually includes traditional food, such as ugali, chapati, mbuga and irio, alongside meat and vegetables.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Kenya, though bottled water is readily available. Volunteers can bring their own bottles or water containers although there is provision of filtered water at the guesthouse. However, clean water is available at the accommodation. Volunteers typically drink around half a gallon, or two liters, per day, which adds up to cost around $5-10 per week although drinking water is available at the volunteer house.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please make a note on your application so arrangements can be made. However, it is important that volunteers do not expect to eat as you normally do at home.

  • After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Mombasa International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa.
  • Before you arrive, you will be given navigational guidance by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation. A pick-up is usually recommended but do note the pick-up fee is not included in the fee.
  • If you are traveling in Kenya prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Mombasa on the day before your program orientation or you can navigate by yourself to the destination. Please make sure to keep in touch with the program coordinator and you will be assisted and guided during the tenure of your tour and stay accordingly. After all, traveling is always smoother when it has a proper communication system.

Sur le projet

Likoni AID 4 Civicom is a registered CBO that encompasses all aspects of community improvement from environmentalism to childcare and even female emancipation.

Rencontrez votre hôte

The organization was founded by Jonathan Munyany, a local suburban citizen, in the year 2008 with 12 children and little amenities. Sooner than later, the humanitarian work of the foundation started grabbing eyeballs and word spread around to support the children centre. Ever since, the organization has shifted to a different home and has grown the strength with more facilities.

The organization strives to provide all the basic needs to ensure the kids don't feel left out from their right to a proper education in a digitally fast-paced world. The center procures funds from independent donors for assistance in terms of food, education sponsorship, clothing, bill payments, etc.

There are other fields of environmentalism as well that comprises sustainable farming, organic farming and a need for hydrologists or agronomists.

The mission of LA4C is to bring in more indigenous resources for funding childcare and community welfare projects. Our goal is to alleviate human suffering, child care and protection through advocacy and networking for self sustainable projects, building of community models, hence improving livelihoods. The purpose is to bring in volunteers so that they can learn with the lifestyle of the people and the kids here going through a hard yet simple life before they can emerge in the world outside. Simultaneously, the volunteers can provide help in upgradation of certain facilities in different ways.

The Organization’s Current Objectives:

  1. To carry out empowerment activities that engage the women and the local youth in the post-pandemic era.
  2. To help understand the global culture and reciprocate in an equally appreciative manner.
  3. Create awareness and action-based approaches in environmental conservation at grassroots level.
  4. Literacy enhancement and incorporate better pedagogical styles.
  5. Betterment of community health through digital awareness and state-of-the-art practices.
  6. Promote Cultural exchange among communities and visitors to promote harmonious and mutually respectful collaboration.
  7. The Technical Vocational Training (TVT) program to equip the youth with life skills like tailoring, bead work, T-shirt printing and many more.
  8. The women’s empowerment projects including juice-making, tailoring, embroidery, making peanut butter and many more.
  9. Improvement of the surrounding environment for a greener and cleaner future.
  10. Conduct the volunteering programs that allows volunteers to visit and stay at the orphanage in aid of material, technical, spiritual, manpower and financial support.

Future goals:

In the current world, thanks to the pandemic, it is no illusion that a lot of things have changed, are changed and will change in coming times. Hence, the balance of the goals in regard to the imminent and inevitably changing environment have to be committed and flexible enough. As the global environment keeps changing, the organizational goals and strategies will be similarly aligned to develop a truly up-to-date environment where the communities know what’s going on and how to live with the current locale.

OUR CHALLENGES

In our services to the vulnerable children, we would like to give the best to them but lack of man-power and financial stability has hindered immediate and long-term efficacy.

The listed are some of our operational challenges that we kindly submit a humble request for mentorship and support:

  1. Lack of a permanent home for conducive accommodation, privacy and security for the children; we currently live in a rental house, moving from place to place like nomads which affects the children psychologically and strains the care-takers as well.
  2. Poor infrastructure and access to social amenities.
  3. Lack of digital awareness and inaccessibility to worldwide marketing.
  4. Lack of clean water for drinking and domestic purposes.
  5. Shortage of food.
  6. Lack of effective and efficient man power support and sustainability.
  7. Insecurity due to political influence and the rising juvenile gangs.
  8. Lack of environmental awareness regarding plantation, farming and horticulture.
