As
Tanzania strives to reach middle income status, the health sector has resolved
to give more attention to the quality of health services in tandem with the
pursuit of universal access. At the same time, better health for the entire
population has been promoted through the adoption of health in all policies.
The country has made impressive gains in reducing under-five and infant
mortality, through strengthening immunization services and improved preventive
services for malaria and other childhood diseases. A number of new HIV cases
have been also decreasing. However, Maternal Mortality is still high in
Tanzania as the Millennium Development Goal, (MDG), targets were not attained.
The Tanzania Development Vision 2025 (TDV 2025) is a document providing direction and a philosophy for long-term development. By 2025, Tanzania wants to achieve a high quality of livelihood for its citizens, peace, stability and unity, good governance, a well-educated society, and a competitive economy capable of producing sustainable growth and shared benefits by 2025. The TDV 2025 document identifies health as one of the priority sectors contributing to a higher-quality livelihood for all Tanzanians.
Due to constraints of key components of the health system like human resources, supplies of medicines and health products, not all primary health services are of sufficient quality. In certain geographical areas, populations still live far away from health services. This has especially been problematic in terms of maternal and newborn care. The referral system does not always function as required, sometimes due to a lack of adequate transport to the next level of care or due to an inability at the referral level to provide adequate services. Health sector challenges posed by current financing levels and modalities require change to the way financial access to health care is organized, greater efforts on resource mobilization, transparency and social accountability, as well as more determined measures to strengthen the health system as a whole. To address this challenge, VoSTa under the project of HEAL ME, Through Health education, home based care, first Aid Courses, clinic support and so on, decided to support those actions through volunteerism.
VoSTa with the collaboration with Makoye Hospital is looking for Whether you’re a pre-med student, Nurse, qualified professional or someone interested in healthcare, join the VoSTa team on this meaningful volunteer program in the heart of Tanzania. Home-Based Care
Volunteers accompany local caregivers to several Geita communities and support their home-based care program. Immerse yourself in traditional Tanzanian life as you walk through the villages and visit the homes of patients suffering from a variety of illnesses. The aim is to provide comfort, educate and increase awareness as you offer medical care. Advise on the importance of treatment adherence and medication compliance to members of the community who are between clinic visits or have limited access to the clinics. Listening to patients’ stories with an empathetic ear is an invaluable way to relieve concern and offer support. Things that you may take for granted such as understanding the significance of hygiene, staying hydrated, a healthy diet and exercise is often an essential part of this healthcare service.
Health Education
Be part of the bigger picture and contribute to health talks at local schools, training centers, and support groups by discussing relevant health issues. Facilitate workshops with community members on topics such as living positively with HIV, nutrition, cervical cancer and women’s health. This form of education is vital as it provides individuals with the knowledge and ability to make healthy lifestyle choices within the context of their environment. Sharing knowledge is very powerful and the presence of volunteers is key in motivating community members
