Clou

Work on underprivileged youth communities to help them with IT skills.
Learn Swahili and share your knowledge of languages; take lots of pictures.
Mingle with the locals as and when you want. Learn about their habitat, lifestyles and share the same. Teach them the beauty of gadgets and help them understand their importance.
Make memories you will never forget in Kenya. After the wholesome experience, you will be given a certificate of recommendation for your valuable inputs.
Unwind yourself on local excursions and weekend safaris; don’t forget to pack your camera along.
The world is moving on at a rapid pace with newer enhancements in technology. We need you to collaborate together and bring the needy youth up to par & make a difference. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Âge 18+
Seul voyageur
Couples
Groupes
50+

Background:

Are you a tech-savvy expert who also has a passion in sharing knowledge and living in another country? Can you design websites? Would you like to have a mark of your own in the land of Simba? Then this is your chance.

'The internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.'

- Bill Gates

Indeed, as certain as his words are, most east African communities are bereft of better networking skills. Some don’t even know what the world is going through, even in present times. Their major source for the outside world is the news screen on televisions. What they understand is the paramount importance of gadgets and their importance but their outreach is limited to basic social media.

Ongoing problems:

  • Kids have computer studies in their curricula yet they lack any practical training; teachers often use single tabs or blackboards to explain them.
  • Very little or no vocational training is imparted to youths graduating from sophomore year. This diminishes their chances to go abroad or pursue their desired career in programming or cybernetics, etc.
  • Women are often restricted to household chores despite their ability to pick up IT skills faster than their male counterparts; YES!! The age-old stigma of masculine superiority still exists in this part of the world. This is due to lack of proper training personnel or lack of funds or digital resources (computers, projectors, etc.) to continue the much-needed training.
  • Websites are not often properly organized by professionals which render schools and other social projects helpless and vulnerable to mouth-of-word existence as well as marketability. As such, people resort to very expensive developers or the whole project simply falls stagnant.

Current requirements:

  • We need tech-smart people (preferably retired or current professionals) to come in & teach these youths about the automated growth within society and how it can help them in furthering the career prospects in future.
  • We also need website developers and website content designers which is of urgent preference. Somebody who can fund and create a budget-friendly website would be very useful and aptly appreciable in this hour of need.
  • We could use former or current programming or IT instructors to teach kids about computers, internet, database programming, logo, etcetera.
  • Lastly, we could use people who can get us help in availing donations in resources (gadgets and tools).

Journée Typique

First Day: On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your accommodation by a local coordinator/staff member and allowed to relax and rest.

Following that, you will meet the admin and the organizational hierarchy who will explain the work and the ongoing projects to be done.

Weekdays - A typical volunteer day would be as follows:

  • 8:30 AM: Volunteer leaves for the project destination. The volunteer joins with the local staff and will be oriented about the work to be done.
  • 12.00 PM – 2.00 PM: Lunch break. During this lunch break, you are welcome to eat out or eat at the accommodation.
  • 2.00 PM - 4.00 PM: Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to travel around and explore or do anything at his/her own choice.
  • 7.00 PM: Dinner in the volunteer house.

Saturdays and Sundays are free days for the volunteers. They can choose to explore the city around or do as they wish.

Volunteers can assist the kids in household chores such as cleaning, laundry, cooking, dishes, etc. or career counseling sessions can be held with prior intimation.

Note – Volunteers are advised to bring their own equipment and will work closely with social workers and teachers. Volunteers would assist the teachers in creating a positive and collaborative atmosphere and supporting them in giving instructions to kids. About the location, volunteers could be arranged to go to either of the schools under the social project based on the availability and requirement. Every locale will be coast-side so instructions would be forwarded after prior discussion.

Activités de Loisir

During the weekend, volunteers have spare time to relax or take the opportunity to explore the Mombasa locale, such as visiting the beach, planning a fun and entertainment program with the kids, etc.

Also, they can tour in and around places like Malindi, Kilifi, Diani and so on.

There’s no dearth of places of rich and cultural heritage and the famed African wildlife.

NOTE- The program coordinator can arrange for sightseeing, only after proper intimation and discussion.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION -

We do understand that some volunteers may not be able to spend as much so it is better that they discuss with the management prior to arranging a stay. In the times of the pandemic, empathy is a route to better communication and compassion. Although the money is directly invested for the provisions of the volunteers and the children and the caregivers, what we need in exchange for a budget compromise is your love, energy and ideas that can suit our betterment.

Logement

Volunteers are accommodated in a volunteer house, where you can expect to share a room with three to seven other volunteers. Bedrooms are comprised of bunk beds with bedding provided, which includes a bedding, blanket and pillow. The volunteer house has electricity and running water. There is an additional lobby for meals and meetings. It may also consist of floor mattress or simple wooden cots with mosquito nettings.

Volunteers are strictly asked to oblige and not make expensive or unnecessary demands as we had certain futile exchanges in the past. Of course, at the end of the day, we all want to be friends and sharing our stories and living our days together as a part of community experience.

The second project is in Mwtapa, which is 1 hour away from Mombasa amidst beautiful green locale.

Currently, works are underway to accommodate Wi-Fi and running internet in the projects.

Dortoir Famille d'accueil Chambre double
Aliments & Boissons

Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast and dinner), which are served at the accommodation. However, in case of lunch, it may be at one’s own expense or sometimes shared with the school staff. Not to worry, a proper local lunch usually costs no more than 1.5-2 euros.

Breakfast is served around 7 am and generally consists of chai (tea), toast, fruit and sometimes mandazi (African donuts). A typical lunch can include vegetables with rice, occasional meat and fruit and is best taken around 1-2 pm. Dinner is usually served around 7-8 pm and usually includes traditional food, such as ugali, chapati, mbuga and irio, alongside meat and vegetables.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Kenya, though bottled water is readily available. Volunteers typically drink around half a gallon, or two liters, per day, which adds up to cost around $5-10 per week although drinking water is available at the volunteer house.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please make a note on your application so arrangements can be made. However, it is important that volunteers do not expect to eat as you normally do at home.

Informations sur l'arrivée

Volunteers can apply at the soonest as this is a time-based project.

The program orientation begins usually on the day of the volunteer’s arrival or a day after, given the randomly changing flight schedules in lieu of the recent covid19 situation.

In case the volunteer is scheduled for Nairobi, there might be additional charges for pickup assistance or a proper navigational guidance for the route to Mombasa.

We strongly advise volunteers to save time and money to book a direct or a 1-stop flight to Mombasa (IATA code – MBA) as the final destination and their place of volunteering is the same.

  • After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Mombasa International Airport.
  • When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation.
  • If you are traveling in Kenya prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Mombasa on the day before your program orientation or you can navigate by yourself to the destination. Please make sure to keep in touch with the program coordinator and you will be assisted and guided during the tenure of your tour and stay accordingly. After all, traveling is always smoother when it has a proper communication system.
  • Orientation is given by the admin or a staff member in the orphanage campus.
  • Orientation begins on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Kenya – Introduction to Mombasa, Kenyan Customs, Language Training Details, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Travel Opportunities in Kenya (in and around Mombasa) and Introduction to your project.

Once your orientation is complete, you will be guided to your work location and you can proceed with the relevant work.

**We strongly advise visitors not to reserve night flights as transport for pick-up might not be available. Preferably between 2300 to 0400 hours any day (east African Time).**
