Volunteers will teach English through the internet to left-behind and rural children in rural China between the ages of 7 and 18.

The program provides regular online English lessons to rural and left-behind students in China. Each student attend at least a 12 lessons and are encouraged to enroll in a longer program. The lessons are delivered through a online teaching platform by volunteers based all over the world. All volunteers receive training and support from Stepping Stones. We ensure that volunteers are supported with updated and well-tested teaching materials and regular guidance.
The program is named School Videolink Program, which consists of volunteers teaching online to 12-40 students located in a school classroom or local community center.
The original and interactive teaching materials make the lessons more personalized and easier for volunteers to teach. Our impact evaluations suggest that the program has a positive impact on students' confidence, motivation and skills in English, especially on their confidence to speak English in class and to increase their English grades.
Main Requirements
- Minimum
Age: 18 years old. In
order to join the program volunteers need to be at least 18 years old on the
program start date. There might be exemptions (i.e., 16 or 17 years old ) if you can provide the
permission of your legal guardians.
- Nationality
Restrictions: No
restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
- Language
Skills: Volunteers need to speak English (fluently).
Good oral Chinese skills a plus but not
essential.
- Training: Volunteers must
attend the online training session organized by Stepping Stones.
- Time
Commitment:2-3
hours per week (including lesson preparation time) and a minimum of
one school term (12 weeks) in Spring or Fall term. Volunteers
are responsible for delivering at least one 40-minute lesson per
week. Teaching schedule is flexible based on volunteers’ and
students’ availability. Classes
are mainly from Monday to Friday, either in early
morning, lunch time or afternoons (China time zone). Limited classes are
available on the weekend.
The program provides regular online English lessons to rural and left-behind students in China. Each volunteer is expected to teach at least one 40-minutes online lesson per week for a minimum of 12 weeks during the school terms (Fall and Spring semesters). Volunteers are also expected to spend around 1--2 hours in lesson preparation per week. Volunteers can teach the lesson from their own home
anywhere in the world.
A volunteer typical day would be to prepare, review and upload the lesson PPT provided by stepping Stones on our video conference platform. Then, after all the students have logged in, the volunteer would teach one 40 minutes lesson.
