The project

The restoration and renovation project aims to build and renovate buildings that are essential for the growth and development of the local community. It allows you to travel to remote villages and assist with setting up basic infrastructure facilities. You can contribute to improving living conditions for local families by relieving some of the stress and pressure that they endure. The work includes developing and building schools, public facilities, recreational centres and participating in restoring and renovating old schools and institutions. You may join ongoing and already existing projects depending on the needs of the community. With the guidance and training of a local coordinator, you will work alongside local families and other project participants. The project requires hard physical and manual labour while you are laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, laying tiles and landscaping/gardening.

As a part of this project you will experience an ancient culture and participate in novel ways of helping in developing the local infrastructure of village communities.

The location

Mongolia, the world’s most sparsely populated fully sovereign country in the world, is landlocked between China and Russia and covers approximately the same territory as the historical Outer Mongolia. It is a very safe country to visit and one of the world’s last undiscovered travel destinations. Greeted by the traditional hospitality of the local nomads, you can experience forests, deserts, blue skies, crystal clear rivers, lakes and vast open-air spaces. The country’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is a beautiful city of contrasts which vibrates with life. It is the largest city and home to almost half of the country’s total population which is dispersed at 1.7 people per km². Now settled at the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, the city was founded in the 17th century as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It is a major manufacturing centre and since the transition of the country to market economy it has witnessed significant growth.

Known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky" or "Country of Blue Sky" because of its sunny days during most of the year, Mongolia enchants travellers with its majestic vast empty spaces and nature. The highly continental climate combines warm summers with dry, very cold long winters. From November to March the temperature stays below zero and winter nights with -40°C are common. In the summers, extremes can reach +40°C in the Gobi Desert and +33°C in Ulaanbaatar. In many regions of the country monthly temperature variations of 45°C are common.

Journée Typique

On Monday and Tuesday during your first week you will get to know Mongolia, learn basic skills to communicate with the local people, go sightseeing and walk through the ancient bazaars with their enchanting sounds and colours. Starting on Wednesday after breakfast you will begin planning the project together with your assigned coordinator. After you receive all needed information and you have finished planning the project you will leave to work at the location. Once your work day is done, you will return to the centre to attend a meeting where you can provide feedback on your first day. On Thursday and Friday your day will begin early as you will be taken to the project site and will start with your assigned tasks for the day. After lunch, in the afternoon, you will work at the community location where you will continue with construction and renovation activities.

Starting your second week your typical day will begin at 9:00 a.m with lunch served between 12:30 p.m to 1:00 p.m. You will participate in various restoration and renovation activities.
