Karibu (Welcome)!!
INTRODUCTION:
Timbwani Baptist Primary School is a primary level institution located in the Likoni county of Mombasa, Kenya. Named in the honor of the local church, it was opened in 1992 By a pastor with a full-fledged community support with the sole purpose of serving the poor and the needy kids from the surroundings. It is easy to reach from Ukunda via shuttle or from Mombasa via shuttle and Likoni ferry.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The school had been undertaking a voluntary tutelage and educational assistance program for the young kids since 1995-2001 from volunteers all across the world. The participants range from novel entrepreneurs to fresh-out graduates to experienced corporates and simultaneously, many firms and foundations have come together to sponsor the essential needs of the children and the staff members. Since the commencement of such a program, the school has started developing in other community welfare areas such as vocational and technical training, women’s empowerment, cultural exchange and seaside tourism to boost the revenue. The motto of such a brilliant and brave proposition was, and still remains, to help develop self-sustainability projects for the children, their families and the women of the society. In doing so, it is imparting an irreplaceable outlook to the very image of the school and inspiring other surrounding institutions to follow suit. The school, through this program, has additionally helped two orphanage centres in Likoni and a neighborhood school with utilities and stationery items in the past and is continuing to do so even now.
Currently, we are offering them elementary and primary education to the same from the local community and the institution has 9 teachers tending to over 287 children. Unfortunately, the school doesn’t have enough space due to the surrounding buildings and can barely manage to sustain less than 100-150 students at a time.
POST-PANDEMIC ERA:
During the start of the covid19, the school had to be closed down like the rest of the world, thus halting education, lifestyle and sustenance. It was a huge blow not just to the grownups but also to the little faces whose smiles vanished without any activity, friends to play with or homely solitude. However, with the world slowly and steadily opening up, the program is once again up and running for the past 2 months.
Unfortunately, due to lack of funds and communal insecurity, much of the school is in a dilapidated and declining state. Hence, the call for help is to provide a silver lining for the much-awaited re-construction and renovation.
OUR MISSION:
Ashanti (Thank you)!!
We hope to see you soon and work with us together for a brighter future.
First Day: On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your accommodation by a local coordinator/staff member so you can relax and rest. Following that, you will meet the admin and the staff members who will explain the work and the ongoing projects to be done. Please ensure to inform the admin/contact person about the flight ETA and other details, if required, prior to the journey. This would avoid any unnecessary loss of time by waiting at the airport.
Of course, when it comes to lending any sort of aid, there is no barrier or limit.
Good Samaritans come in different avatars.
Typical working days (Monday-Thursday) for the volunteers:
1. 09:00 – 11:00 hours: Assisting with general tasks such as teaching at the school (subject chosen as per volunteer’s choice) and playing educational games. Learn the current methods and induce newer methods with more audio-visual presence of the lessons. Additionally, help with buying stationery items, if there is a need for that. (As mentioned before, most students can barely afford a pair of shoes, let alone the whole curriculum).
2. 11:30 – 13:30 hours: Relaxation time at the orphanage and enjoy lunch.
3. 13:30 – 16:00 hours: Back to classes and help the faculty with lessons and homework for the day.
4. 16:00 – 17:30 hours: Time for evening siesta or fun games; cultural exchange with the children of any kind.
5. 18:00 – rest of the night: Personal time for the volunteer.
Friday and Saturday are work-as-per-your-time days for the volunteers. They can choose to explore the city around or do as they wish. Also, the weekend is the best day where the school can be notified of any renovation work and can be requested to put off the classroom sessions for the volunteers to continue with their work. Please note that volunteers must plan and request in advance to the management for such a decision to avoid any undue delay or confusion.
Sunday is a complete off-day.
The list goes on and on….
NOTE- The program coordinator/director can arrange for sightseeing, only after proper intimation and discussion.
The visa arrangements, pre-departure PCR tests, vaccination costs (if the traveler is unvaccinated or partially vaccinated) and the flights have to be done on the applicant’s part. The program supervisors will try their utmost best to make the volunteer’s journey and stay hassle-free.
According to current rules, if the visitor is unvaccinated, don’t get scared. We got you covered. You can come to Kenya and get it for free! Sounds good, right?
SPECIAL CONSIDERATION -
We do understand that some volunteers may not be able to spend as much so it is better that they discuss with the management prior to arranging a stay. In the times of the pandemic, empathy is a route to better communication and compassion. Although the money is directly invested for the provisions of the volunteers and the children and the caregivers, what we need in exchange for a budget compromise is your love, energy and ideas that can suit our betterment.
Volunteers are accommodated in a volunteer house, where you can expect to share a room with three to seven other volunteers. Bedrooms are comprised of bunk beds with bedding provided, which includes a bedding, blanket and pillow.
The volunteer house is located in Mombasa, 10 minutes from the project site. The volunteer house has electricity and running water.
There is an additional lobby for meals and meetings.
One can always stay at the school for any purpose until sunset (except for Sundays) on condition that the school’s decorum be maintained.
Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), which are served at the accommodation or the project site.
Breakfast is served from 7 am and generally consists of chai (tea) or coffee, toast, margarine/jam, fruits and sometimes mandazi (African donuts). A typical lunch can include vegetables with rice, occasional meat and fruits and is served around 1-2 pm. Dinner is usually served around 7-8 pm and usually includes traditional food, such as ugali, chapati, mbuga and irio, alongside meat and vegetables. Volunteers are also free to cook any meal by themselves, with prior notice.
Tap water is usually not safe to drink in the project site due to its closeness to the Indian ocean, though bottled water is readily available. However, clean water is available at the accommodation. Volunteers typically drink around half a gallon, or two liters, per day, which adds up to cost around $5-10 per week although drinking water is available at the volunteer house.
If you have any special dietary requirements, please make a note on your application so arrangements can be made. However, it is important that volunteers should not expect to eat as you normally do at home.
Volunteers can apply at the soonest as this is a time-based project.
The program orientation begins usually on the day of the volunteer’s arrival or a day after, given the randomly changing flight schedules in lieu of the recent covid19 situation.
In case the volunteer is scheduled for Nairobi, there might be additional charges for pickup assistance or a proper navigational guidance for the route to Mombasa.
We strongly advise volunteers to save time and money to book a direct or a 1-stop flight to Mombasa (IATA code – MBA) as the final destination and their place of volunteering is the same.
