The project
The sports project will give you an opportunity to contribute with your sporting skills and train young children to develop physical fitness, learn new sports and compete in a healthy way. Through your interest in sports, your enthusiasm to share your knowledge and your energy you will contribute to the children’s physical development and growing their confidence, which will help them in the future. Together with a local coach you can engage the children from the nearby community in training and different sports-related activities depending on their age, preferences and interests.
Explore the fascinating land of Genghis Khan and help kids develop physically, build their confidence and perhaps they can grow to become successful sportsmen representing their country internationally!
The location
Mongolia, the world’s most sparsely populated fully sovereign country in the world, is landlocked between China and Russia and covers approximately the same territory as the historical Outer Mongolia. It is a very safe country to visit and one of the world’s last undiscovered travel destinations. Greeted by the traditional hospitality of the local nomads, you can experience forests, deserts, blue skies, crystal clear rivers, lakes and vast open-air spaces. The country’s capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is a beautiful city of contrasts which vibrates with life. It is the largest city and home to almost half of the country’s total population, which is dispersed at 1.7 people per km². Now settled at the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, the city was founded in the 17th century as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It is a major manufacturing centre and since the transition of the country to market economy it has witnessed significant growth.
Known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky" or "Country of Blue Sky" because of its sunny days during most of the year, Mongolia enchants travellers with its majestic vast empty spaces and nature. The highly continental climate combines warm summers and dry, very cold long winters. From November to March the temperature is below zero and winter nights with -40°C are common. In the summers, extremes can reach +40°C in the Gobi Desert and +33°C in Ulaanbaatar. In many regions of the country, monthly temperature variations of 45°C are common.
On Monday and Tuesday of your first week you will start your Mongolian experience by learning some basic language skills, which will allow you to communicate with the local people. You will learn about Mongolia’s ancient culture and visit some sights as well as the ancient bazaars with their captivating sounds and colours. On Wednesday, you will start planning the project together with your assigned coordinator. When you are done planning the project you will have lunch and leave for the school to start work. After your work is done you will return to the centre and attend a meeting during which you can give feedback on your first day at the placement. The next day will start earlier. You will go to the project site and get to teach sports rules and the basics of games, you will show examples of different sports and play together with the children teaching them how to show respect and play fair.
Starting your second week, your work days will start at 9 a.m with lunch being served between 12:30 p.m and 1:00 p.m.
You need to arrive on the Sunday before your start date (each Monday) to be picked up from the airport. If you need to arrive earlier or later, additional fees will apply. Check with us before booking any flights.
During your project you will stay in a standard apartment house in Ulaanbaatar. You will experience a typical home environment and share a single-gender room with 6-7 other participants. The bathrooms are shared and there are hot showers. The rooms are not lockable but you can use a safety box for any valuables you would prefer kept safe. Bed linens are provided; however, you need to bring your own towels. Please note that there is no laundry machine in the house however you can use a local launderette for an extra cost. Private rooms are available for an additional £100(please ask for $ equivalent) per week.
Within a two kilometer radius you can find a supermarket, a laundromat, a salon, a cinema, ATM, money exchange, sim card shop and photocopy shops.
Three meals per day are provided during the week and two meals at the weekends. The meals are a mix of Western and Asian food including mainly vegetarian dishes such as rice and vegetables. Twice a week you can expect to be served a chicken dish and you can also use the kitchen facilities to cook for yourself. There are also local restaurants to explore if you wish.
This project is ongoing and runs all year. Placements start each Monday
