    À propos du programme

This is a conservation internship for those who are a little different, because Madagascar is a little different. Most of the species on the island can only be found here. This includes the famous lemur, the most endangered mammal on earth.

You’ll be working to conserve the sole remaining rainforest on Nosy Be island and its at-risk inhabitants in the protected area of Lokobe National Park. Some of the precious species that call this singular old-growth rainforest home are the critically endangered Nosy Be mouse lemur, also known as the Claire’s mouse lemur, one of the smallest primates in the world.

Through population census and biodiversity surveys, you’ll help to gather data on these threatened species. Your work will also help to establish the baseline biodiversity of the forest.

Some of the most significant threats to wildlife in the area are deforestation and poaching. You’ll be learning from local conservationists how they prevent both and get involved where you can. You might discuss with them how they work against illegal logging or how they protect the panther chameleon, an animal frequently poached for the international pet trade. There might also be a chance to support indigenous plant nurseries and help work to establish new populations of traditional medicinal plants.

    Journée typique

Please note that this is just a sample schedule and your daily tasks will be influenced by the needs of the project and the activities happening during your program.

6:00 AM Get ready for the day: Take in the morning views and fresh sea air. If you're an early riser you can enjoy a walk or run before breakfast.
6:30 AM Breakfast: Prepare and enjoy breakfast with the team. After breakfast, everyone gathers for the “daily update” where the staff will share important details about project work and activities for the day ahead.
7:00 AM Terrestrial hike: Hike through the nearby forest and hills to collect data on focus species and biodiversity.
12:30 PM Lunch: Lunch is enjoyed as a group. Lunch meals are prepared by a local cook during the week which gives you the opportunity to try delicious Malagasy dishes.
1:00 PM Training, internship or research project work, or free time: Depending on your program type, you might attend training on conservation or community initiatives, work on your internship or research project or use the free time to further your knowledge on your program area.
3:30 PM Educational workshops: Continue project work in the afternoon. Deliver environmental awareness workshops or teach English to local fishers.
6:30 PM Dinner: Enjoy the evening meal together. After dinner, it’s common to have reflection sessions where you'll discuss the work you did for the day and its impact on the environment and local community.
7:30 PM Free time or nocturnal surveys: If you have free time to relax and get involved in social activities, you can make use of the common areas to spend time with your new friends, play a game, or do some studying. Alternatively, you might take part in a nocturnal survey.

You will have free time on a Saturday and Sunday. You'll need to be back at the research station before dinner on Sunday evening so that you're ready for the week ahead.

There are many activities, both near and far, that you can do over weekends, including, snorkeling with giant green turtles in Nosy Sakatia, hiking Mount Passot to watch the sunset or visiting the Sacred Lakes and giant Sacred Banyan Tree. Whale watching for humpbacks is an option between July and November each year, and snorkeling with whale sharks can be done between October and December. If you're a qualified diver, there is also the option for Hammerhead shark diving in January and February. There is no public transport route that passes the research station, but you can arrange transport in advance which would usually be a tuk-tuk.

    Transfert de l'aéroport Fascene Airport

Ethiopian Airlines offers the most direct routes to Nosy Be. Flights from most locations fly via Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to Nosy Be. Using the airline's official website is usually the best for finding flights. Fascene International Airport can have lengthy processing times, so plan accordingly. Flights usually arrive around 2:30 PM. The airport is very small with only one terminal gate so it's easy to navigate.

We strongly recommend avoiding flights into Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo (Tana), the capital city of Madagascar, due to the high costs and complexities of navigating onward transit. However, if Nosy Be is not directly accessible, you can fly into Ivato International Airport and book a connecting domestic flight to Fascene Airport.

Upon arrival at Fascene International Airport, you will be greeted by a GVI Madagascar staff member outside the arrivals areas as only passengers and airport staff are allowed inside the terminal. Look for someone wearing a GVI T-shirt and holding a GVI sign. They will accompany you to the transport that will take you to our research station. The journey from the airport to the research station takes around 30-40 minutes.

    Logement

Your accommodation – which is a stone’s throw from the beach – consists of dormitory style rooms with shared bathroom facilities. We use solar power. Conditions are basic but comfortable and there are lots of spaces for training workshops and to carry out research, or relax after a busy day. We’re much like a big family on base, and cooking and tidying duties are shared on a rotational basis among staff and participants. Evenings include debriefs on the day’s activities, enjoying a meal together, and optional social activities and games.
