While volunteering on the Archaeological Heritage project, volunteers will work alongside a team of local archaeologists, by assisting them in specific activities. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 20+
Singoli
Coppie
Gruppi
The main goal is to bring to light old archaeological finds of the Roman and Etruscan era, in "minor" excavation sites, in order to preserve them and prepare them for restoration activities and subsequent exhibition or conservation in museums and / or institutions suitable for the purpose.

Some of the activities at the excavation sites in Allumiere will be:

  • direct support to the archaeologists
  • excursions during the weekend, with a focus on historical heritage
  • classes (in French) in the evening, about historical heritage
  • free time (after 16:00)

The project starts on Mondays. Referents from the NGO do the pick-up at Civitavecchia train station and then offer a historical tour of the village (Allumiere). On Tuesdays, there is the training on the excavation site and the work begins.

The municipality of Rome is unable to guarantee uniform effectiveness in managing all the archaeological sites present in the area. This depends on a general difficulty in organizing coordination of activities, but also on the lack of economic resources to finance the excavations. This risks ignoring and damaging a historical and cultural heritage that is fundamental for the Italian population, but also decisive in guaranteeing continuous work for archaeologists, historians, restorers and other figures who are highly qualified but have difficulty in recovering and preserving, "on their own. ", the past of Rome.

The volunteers involved in this project will learn a lot about history and archaeology, in a professional way. At the same time, they will contribute supporting the NGO who is taking care or preserving this precious memory that is at the basis of the Italian culture.

Personal equipment to own: safety boots according to EEC safety standards, work gloves according to EEC standards - these tools can also be purchased on site once you arrive at the excavation area. It is strongly recommended to bring water bottle, headgear, country clothing, sleeping bag, bathroom necessaire with you.
-Documentation to be delivered upon arrival at the camp:
identification documents, medical certificate of healthy and robust physical constitution and certificate of tetanus vaccination.
The registration card for the G.A. of Italy will be provided by the association.
-Activities collateral to the excavation:
information on the safety of the participants, training and documentation on the survey, on archaeological photography, on the restoration laboratory, as well as meetings and conferences on the main issues concerning the individual fields and the activities carried out in them.

Typical day

Shifts of activity:
- First Monday: arrival at the excavation site at 6pm, introduction to the program

Around, you can find everything you need: local coffee shops, supermarkets, ATMs, pharmacies and other utilities .
The camping is 5 minutes walking from the bus stop. Fiumicino Airport is around 25km away, while Ciampino Airport is 31km away.

The camping is a green oasis, apart from the fast pace of Rome city center. Its wide spaces contribute to a chill, friendly atmosphere.
The camping mainly accommodate young people and international travelers that want to visit Rome in a more sustainable way.
WiFi is available in some common areas, but there are various green spots perfect to socialize or take some time for yourself. In addition to areas such as the restaurant, there is also a big swimming-pool - accessible from late May until September.
The welcoming and young staff is originally from Rome, so you can ask them the best tips and advices to enjoy the city and surroundings like a local! With us you can also rent bikes for free, explore the city and go biking through the archaeological parks.

The rest of your time in this program, you will stay in a rural house located on the slopes of the Tolfa mountains, towards Tarquinia and the Lazio Maremma. It covers an area of over 400 hectares, of which 200 are woodland and Mediterranean scrub. The remaining area is grazing and arable land. This is the typical habitat of Maremma cattle, an ancient breed, now at risk of extinction. In the company there are about 250 specimens, which live completely in the wild. The business center is made up of a picturesque medieval village, a large neo-Gothic church from the mid-19th century, and an imposing 18th-century barn.
The structures, restored with the utmost care and fidelity, retain the charm of the rustic environment. The apartments in the village, of various sizes, with 2 to 8 beds, also faithfully restored, can accommodate families and groups for holiday periods, always respecting social distancing (according to Covid-19 safety measures) and sanification procedures.
