It is important to make awareness in the community about conservation and protection of the ocean.

Location:

The program’s sea turtle conservation site is located at Tambor Bay, in the south of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. The nursery for the project (where we protect the eggs) is located on the property of Tambor Tropical Beach Resort.

This bay receives the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelis olivacea) sea turtles each year, and the area is a pristine and remote wilderness paradise!

Duties:

As a volunteer you will take part in various conservation activities, including night and morning patrols, relocating nests, recording scientific data, nest exhumations, baby turtles releases, construction activities, beach clean ups, environmental education and ecotourism activities.

You will be working directly with experts and the local community. The main goal of the project is protect the Sea turtles in the Bay, so after some years the population will grow again. Education is one of our main goals. Kids are the future and they need to learn to protect and take care about the world were they live.

Typical day

5am Morning walk to find the nests and tracks - Mother Nature determines our days and patrol times  the tides, the rains,  and the challenges we face keep us guessing sometimes.  Below is how a day might go if everything goes as planned.  Also the different times of the year dictate our schedule.  From the excitement of collecting the first nest we must be patient as they the little one incubate.

  • 7 am: Breakfast
  • 8 am: Work in the hatchery, maintenance or beach clean up. Environmental education could include working with the local schools.
  • 12 pm: Lunch
  • Free time/Nap time
  • 4 pm: Exhumation and baby turtle release
  • 7 pm: Dinner
  • Night walk. The time will depend on the tides.

This represents a typical day but it may change! Some duties may include nursery monitoring or a late night baby release.
