Sul programma

Looking forward to working with a school in a rural setting? Do you wanna experience the challenges of African curriculum? Are you good with kids? If yes is your answer, then don’t hold back.

The Location

Timbwani Baptist Primary School is a primary level institution located in the Likoni county of Mombasa, Kenya. It is easy to reach from Ukunda via shuttle or from Mombasa via shuttle and Likoni ferry.

Vision Academy was started under a cashew tree at a village township called Bamburi in Majenge Kanamai Location, approximately 2-3 hours from the airport. It was established in the May of 2006 with the sole purpose of educating the poor and the needy rural kids and also establishing a holistic form of education.

Volunteers would work with either of these two schools or a lot of similar schools or children centres within the same area based on the coordinator’s discretion.

The Challenges

Challenges faced:

  • Lack of resources to reach out and advance the power of education.
  • Include systematic digitization.
  • Lack of personnel to assist the teachers.
  • Absence of neo-noir teaching styles involving body language pedagogy and blackboard.
Your Tasks

We are looking for volunteers to help us with:

  • Improving teaching styles.
  • Mixing of indigenous curriculum in sync with the modern ways of digital education.
  • Providing extra resources for teaching.
  • Mentorship for the primary (grades 3-5).

Giornata tipica

First Day

On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your accommodation by a local coordinator/staff member and allowed to relax and rest. Following that, you will meet the admin and the organizational hierarchy who will explain the work and the ongoing projects to be done.

Please ensure to inform the admin/contact person about the flight ETA and other details, as and when required, prior to the journey. This would avoid any unnecessary loss of time by waiting at the airport.

Typical Day

A typical volunteer day would be as follows:

  • 8:30 AM: Volunteer leaves for the project destination. The volunteer joins with the local staff and will be oriented about the work to be done.
  • 12.00 PM – 2.00 PM: Lunch break. During this lunch break, you are welcome to eat out or eat at the accommodation.
  • 2.00 PM - 4.00 PM: Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to travel around and explore or do anything at his/her own choice.
  • 7.00 PM: Dinner in the accommodations.

Usual work days are Monday to Friday. And Saturdays and Sundays are off-work days.

The best part about the project and the program is its time notwithstanding.

Attività del tempo libero

During the weekend, volunteers have spare time to:

  • relax or take the opportunity to explore the Mombasa locale, such as visiting the beach, planning a fun and entertainment program with the kids, etc.

Please note: The program coordinator/director can arrange for sightseeing, only after proper intimation and discussion.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION -

We do understand that some volunteers may not be able to spend as much so it is better that they discuss with the management prior to arranging a stay. In the times of the pandemic, empathy is a route to better communication and compassion. Although the money is directly invested for the provisions of the volunteers and the children and the caregivers, what we need in exchange for a budget compromise is your love, energy and ideas that can suit our betterment.

Alloggio

Volunteers are accommodated in a volunteer house, where you can expect to share a room with three to seven other volunteers. Bedrooms are comprised of bunk beds with bedding provided, which includes a bedding, blanket and pillow.

The volunteer house is located in Mombasa, 10 minutes from the project site. The volunteer house has electricity and running water.

There is an additional lobby for meals and meetings.

One can always stay at the school for any purpose until sunset (except for Sundays) on condition that the school’s decorum be maintained.

Cibo e Bevande

Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast and dinner), which are served at the accommodation. However, in case of lunch, it may be at one’s own expense or sometimes shared with the school staff. Not to worry, a proper local lunch usually costs no more than 1.5-2 euros.

  • Breakfast is served around 7 am and generally consists of chai (tea), toast, fruit and sometimes mandazi (African donuts).
  • A typical lunch can include vegetables with rice, occasional meat and fruit and is best taken around 1-2 pm.
  • Dinner is usually served around 7-8 pm and usually includes traditional food, such as ugali, chapati, mbuga and irio, alongside meat and vegetables.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Kenya, though bottled water is readily available. Volunteers typically drink around half a gallon, or two liters, per day, which adds up to cost around $5-10 per week although drinking water is available at the volunteer house.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please make a note on your application so arrangements can be made. However, it is important that volunteers do not expect to eat as you normally do at home.

Dettagli all'arrivo

No specific start date

would be announced.

However, with the new systems fast approaching, it would be wise for the volunteers to make the journey at the soonest and get the maximal experience.

The program orientation begins usually on the day of the volunteer’s arrival or the day after, given the randomly changing flight schedules in lieu of the recent covid19 situation.

In case the volunteer is scheduled for Nairobi, there might be additional charges for pickup assistance or a proper navigational guidance for the route to Mombasa.

We strongly advise volunteers to save time and money to book a direct or a 1-stop flight to Mombasa (IATA code – MBA) as the final destination and their place of volunteering is the same.

  • After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at Mombasa International Airport.
  • When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and transported to the volunteer accommodation.
  • If you are traveling in Kenya prior to your volunteer program, we can arrange for you to be picked up in Mombasa on the day before your program orientation or you can navigate by yourself to the destination. Please make sure to keep in touch with the program coordinator and you will be assisted and guided during the tenure of your tour and stay accordingly. After all, traveling is always smoother when it has a proper communication system.
  • Orientation is given by the admin or a staff member in the orphanage campus.
  • Orientation begins on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Kenya – Introduction to Mombasa, Kenyan Customs, Language Training Details, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Travel Opportunities in Kenya (in and around Mombasa) and Introduction to your project.

Once your orientation is complete, you will be guided to your work location and you can proceed with the relevant work.

**We strongly advise visitors not to reserve night flights as transport for pick-up might not be available. Preferably between 2300 to 0400 hours any day (east African Time).**

Sul progetto

Likoni AID 4 Children Centre is a registered charity foundation opened initially with the aim of supporting homeless kids from HIV-stricken families or estranged parents.

Incontra il tuo ospite

The organization was founded by Rev. Ernest Ombeva, a local community pastor, in the year 2001 with 12 children and little amenities. Sooner than later, the humanitarian work of the foundation started grabbing eyeballs and word spread around to support the children centre. Ever since, the organization has shifted to a different home and has grown the strength to 35 children with more facilities.

The organization strives to provide all the basic needs to ensure the kids don't feel left out from their right to a proper education in a digitally fast-paced world. The center procures funds from independent donors for assistance in terms of food, education sponsorship, clothing, bill payments, etc.

The mission of LA4CC is to bring in more indigenous resources for funding childcare and community welfare projects. Our goal is to alleviate human suffering, child care and protection through advocacy and networking for self sustainable projects, building of community models, hence improving livelihoods. The purpose is to bring in volunteers so that they can learn with the lifestyle of the people and the kids here going through a hard yet simple life before they can emerge in the world outside. Simultaneously, the volunteers can provide help in upgradation of certain facilities in different ways.

The Organization’s Charitable Objectives:

  1. To carry out empowerment activities that engage the women and the local youth in the post-pandemic era.
  2. To help understand the global culture and reciprocate in an equally appreciative manner.
  3. Create awareness and action-based approaches in environmental conservation at grassroots level.
  4. Literacy enhancement and incorporate better pedagogical styles.
  5. Betterment of community health through digital awareness and state-of-the-art practices.
  6. Promote Cultural exchange among communities and visitors to promote harmonious and mutually respectful collaboration.
  7. Career guidance and psychological counseling programs for the mentally traumatized or affected due to the immediate environment.
  8. The Technical Vocational Training (TVT) program to equip the youth with life skills like tailoring, bead work, T-shirt printing and many more.
  9. The women’s empowerment projects including juice-making, tailoring, embroidery,
  10. Conduct the volunteering programs that allows volunteers to visit and stay at the orphanage in aid of material, technical, spiritual, manpower and financial support.

Future goals:

In the current world, thanks to the pandemic, it is no illusion that a lot of things have changed, are changed and will change in coming times. Hence, the balance of the goals in regard to the imminent and inevitably changing environment have to be committed and flexible enough. As the global environment keeps changing, the organizational goals and strategies will be similarly aligned to develop a truly up-to-date environment where the communities know what’s going on and how to live with the current locale.

OUR CHALLENGES

In our services to the vulnerable children, we would like to give the best to them but lack of man-power and financial stability has hindered immediate and long-term efficacy.

The listed are some of our operational challenges that we kindly submit a humble request for mentorship and support:

  1. Lack of a permanent home for conducive accommodation, privacy and security for the children; we currently live in a rental house, moving from place to place like nomads which affects the children psychologically and strains the care-takers as well.
  2. Poor infrastructure and access to social amenities.
  3. Lack of digital awareness and inaccessibility to worldwide marketing.
  4. Lack of clean water for drinking and domestic purposes.
  5. Shortage of food.
  6. Huge outstanding bill payment for rent, electricity and water.
  7. Lack of effective and efficient man power support and sustainability.
  8. Insecurity due to political influence and the rising juvenile gangs.
