Travel to Cimaronnes and work alongside a team of international participants on community empowerment projects. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

Experience the Costa Rican culture when you travel to the village of Cimaronnes to work on empowerment initiatives.

As a participant on this program you will contribute directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #4, Quality education. Join a team of international participants and work on various activities depending on the needs of the community at the time.

You could expect to get involved in:

  • Teaching health, wellness and sports at a high school

  • Teaching English and/or math at a high school

  • Teaching English at an Elementary School

  • Potential adult English classes

  • Working with a Women's Entrepreneur group (meetings biweekly)

Expect to be challenged and immersed in real projects, so you will need to be creative, agile, and resourceful, all the while mindful that you will be working with community members who have limited resources.

This program includes an optional Community Development online course which must be completed in order to obtain a certificate offered in partnership with the University of Richmond in the United States.

Typical day

Participants are expected to remain flexible as project work changes based on weather as well as needs of our project partners.

Estimated Schedule:

8-10am: Work with Community

12pm: Lunch

1pm - 4pm: Work with Community/Lesson Prep

6pm: Dinner


Free-time activities

By participating in this program, you are not only offered an opportunity to work toward conserving ecosystems but also the opportunity to see local sites! Our dedicated field staff are the best resource when researching local trips, they have compiled this list of activities.

These side trips are not included in the program fee but are highly recommended:

We also include local/cultural activities once a week for up to 8 weeks.

  • Visit a working fruit plantation
  • Hike through virgin rainforest to a waterfall
  • White water raft down the Pacuare River

Requisiti

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
No skills required, all training is provided online 8 weeks prior to program start date. This program requires you to speak basic Spanish and so a minimum of 10 Hours of Spanish lessons is required unless fluent.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on lunedì, martedì, mercoledì, giovedì and venerdì

Airport pick up is included from Juan Santamaria Airport within a specific window period. 
Accommodation
In central Costa Rica, Cimaronnes our base is nestled in the valley between two national parks. 
Accommodation is in shared dormitories and can be considered basic.

Accommodation is in shared dormitories and can be considered basic. 

Meals are included and participants will take it in turns to cook meals for the group. Dietary requirements can be catered for.

Limited access at the project site
What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. We assist you to find cheap flights to Costa Rica.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Costa Rica provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Costa Rica you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Costa Rica.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with GVI during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
