English Teacher for 'Left-behind' Children

Stepping Stones (founded in 2006) is a non-profit organization registered in Shanghai, China with the mission to improve the education and general welfare of disadvantaged children in China.

 Stepping Stones organizes Rural Individual Volunteering placements where volunteers teach for a minimum of four weeks at a Stepping Stones partner school in rural China. Volunteers bear their own international transport, visa and meal costs, are responsible for their own health and safety and should have their own health insurance. Thanks to sponsor support, Stepping Stones is able to cover domestic transport and local accommodation costs. Orientation, teacher training, project briefing and logistics arrangements for the placement will be provided by Stepping Stones.

 Objectives:

• To bring outside support to neglected students;
• To encourage English learning among students in remote rural areas.

Key Information:

• Minimum of four weeks (classes Monday to Friday)
• During school term time (October-January, February-June) or summer holidays
• Teaching 3-4 (40 min) English lessons during weekdays (large class sizes, usually around 40-60 students per class)
• Rural school or community center

Requirements:

• 20 to 55 years old
• Individually arrange and pay for visa, insurance, meals, any international transport, etc.
• Speak English well and confidently
• Teaching or volunteer experience preferred

Volunteers in this program normally stay at a local hotel not too far from the rural school. They have their own room with wifi and AC/heating. 

Everyday you will be responsible for preparing for their lessons and teaching lessons. 

All our volunteers are well looked after by the local staff (teachers and principals) and they have lots of opportunity to interact with the local English teachers. 

You will also have spare time on the weekends or around class time to do other activities with the students (sports, music, art, etc.), explore the local area, travel to tourist sites, practice your Mandarin, try new food, etc.

China is an extremely diverse country with different terrain and activities. All our partner rural schools and community centers are not too far from some tourist sites and natural areas. You will have the opportunity to try delicious local Chinese food. Transportation in China is easy and you should be able to arrange day trips or weekend trips to cities nearby or other rural areas.
