Curieuse Island and its surrounding waters are a national park, managed by our principal in-country partner, Seychelles National Parks Authority. Our beach-front camp is located on the white sand beach of Anse St Jose and overlooks Praslin (Seychelles' second largest island), just a short boat ride away.

Join a team of international volunteers as an expedition member and volunteer, assisting on priority conservation projects. You will work with a variety of plants and wildlife whilst living the island life, surrounded by the striking azure waters of the marine park.

On this expedition, you will focus on several key conservation efforts within and around the Curieuse Island National Park which may include the following:

  • Lemon Shark Project - We are conducting a capture and release study of the lemon shark population using P.I.T. tags (peak shark tagging season in September to March, far less activity outside of that time).
  • Coco de Mer Survey - The endemic Coco de Mer has the largest seed of all living plants and is found only on the islands of Praslin and Curieuse. Census work is carried out year round, but more effort is expended during the months of April to September.
  • Mangrove Distribution Surveys - Curieuse Island has one of the largest remaining area of mangrove forest left within the Seychelles inner granitic islands. GVI Seychelles is investigating seedling recruitment and mortality and further determining species distribution across the mangroves.
  • Giant Tortoise Census - We conduct an annual census of the giant tortoise population and record key measurements on growth and distribution. The tortoise census is conducted primarily during the months of April to September.
  • Hawksbill Turtle Surveys - We conduct patrols of the beaches, recording data on nesting turtles and tagging females, also monitoring the beaches for signs of nesting activity, and marking nests when we locate them. The peak hawksbill season runs from September to March, although some nest excavations usually continue into April.
  • Beach Profiling - Our beach profiling studies monitor changes throughout the seasons, and will contribute to a long-term dataset to follow the long-term trends.
  • Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) Surveys -We are conducting BRUV surveys to assess the populations of carnivorous fish species along the remote north shore of Curieuse Island.
If you are looking to learn more about conservation, contribute to a meaningful project and spend some time in an incredible location, you don't have to look any further. Please note that our monitoring program and work schedules change seasonally; and projects are available based on the time of year you visit.

Dagelijkse activiteiten

This expedition covers a wide range of conservation efforts as you rotate between projects. You will spend the majority of your time on foot working in the forests and on the beaches, experiencing different field techniques and varied project sites.

At the end of each workday, you will return to our base with the rest of your team to relax together. You will share camp duties on a rotational basis, as well as sleeping in shared dormitory style accommodation.

You should expect to work 5 ½ days each week, Monday to Friday, with weekends free for you to explore the surrounding area, snorkel, dive or just enjoy island living.

Vrijetijdsactiviteiten

You will be based in and around national parks in the main group of islands, and working on a diverse range of wildlife and habitats on and around Curieuse Island. Access to and from the island is only by boat so travel to other islands is limited to weekends. Praslin has a limited, cheap bus service and taxis are easily available. For further exploration you may choose to hire a car on Praslin or make use of the inter-island ferry services between the other islands.

In your down time you will be free to travel in the local area and can expect one or two free days per week, usually at weekends. In this time you could explore the islands of Praslin or La Digue, visit the capital of Mahé, Victoria (although the ferry to Mahe is relatively expensive), visit local beaches, snorkel or just relax on base. Before and after your program you could spend a little more time in the Seychelles on the close-by islands of Praslin and La Digue, or join a charter to sail even further afield. Please allow several days if you hope to travel between islands, there are over 100 in the archipelago but getting around takes time – the possibilities are endless!
