Seeking a diverse 3 week volunteer program in the Tropical North of Queensland? Look no further than this 3 in 1 Reef to Bush Eco-project. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Leeftijd 18+

Spend 3 weeks volunteering in the Tropical North of Queensland engaging in 3 Oceans 2 Earth Volunteers projects from the Great Barrier Reef to a Tropical Wetland Reserve – the best of both biological worlds! Each week brings a unique and different eco-project enhancing and diversifying your skillset.

Week 1/Project 1 – Conservation, Monitoring and Research of the Reef

Based at 2 separate sites across two tropical islands, volunteers tackle head-on some of the threats that face this eco-system including coral bleaching from warming waters, marine debris pollution, the negative effects of mining, overfishing and other threats.

This is an incredible opportunity to contribute to the iconic Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef system. For 7 days you’ll learn to identify the flora and fauna that live on the reef, work with oceanographic organisations based on the reef and assist them with research, monitoring and surveys on the reef. In addition, conduct beach clean-ups and marine debris sweeps.

(Please note: during the months of March, April and October, Week 1 is spent at the turtle rehabilitation centre in place of the standard Week 1 itinerary)

Week 2/Project 2 – Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

The second week involves the care of rescued sea turtles and their rehabilitation until they can be released. During the morning shifts, volunteers prepare food, feed sea turtles and clean turtle tanks.  The sea turtles are brought in suffering from boat strikes, disease, emaciation, fishing line entanglements, etc.  Volunteers experience firsthand the direct or indirect impacts that humans unknowingly impose onto sea turtles and their habitat. Afternoon activities (time permitting) you may have the opportunity to go swimming and snorkelling with wild sea turtles and other charismatic marine wildlife.

Week 3/Project 3 – Australian Bushland Conservation

A change of scenery to a Tropical Wetland Reserve in the North-West of Cairns where you are amongst diverse landscapes including swamps, wetlands, dry savannahs, eucalypt forests and an array of Australian wildlife. This Australian bushland reserve is home to a number of endangered species. Volunteers study and collect data to preserve these beautiful animals and protect their habitat. There is also a wildlife rehabilitation centre where volunteers care for animals in need and prepare them for their eventual release back into the wild. An important aspect of this project is to contribute to the research and conservation initiatives aiming to preserve ecological communities, the cultural heritage of the area and the local community.

Please Note

The second instalment of your project fees is due within 1 week after you paid the deposit on Volunteer World. This is a total of $495 AUD and comes off your balance. The balance is due 90 days prior to travel. For all further information about the fees, please scroll down to the section "Program Fees“.
