Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (“LAMAVE”) is a non-profit dedicated to the research and conservation of marine megafauna in the Philippines.
Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE) is the largest independent non-stock non-government organization dedicated to the conservation of marine megafauna and the marine environment in the Philippines. We strive for conservation through scientific research, policy and education.
LAMAVE's advocacy centers on the conservation of marine megafauna and the marine environment in the Philippines. LAMAVE focuses its efforts on charismatic marine megafauna, using it as an umbrella species to protect the wider marine environment. We identify hotspots and quantify populations of species including whale sharks, turtles and other animals. We use technology, such as satellite and acoustic tags to help determine key habitat sites, home ranges and migratory corridors of marine species. The results are shared with governments and stakeholders, to work together to minimise impacts and develop tools for conservation management such as creating or zoning marine protected areas or advising policy.
LAMAVE has been studying whale sharks in the Philippines since 2012. We started working with this species to understand the human-shark interactions, and how these can be beneficial to local communities as well as for the species. However, human-shark interactions can have ecosystem-level implications which need addressing in order to ensure their long-term sustainability. We are now working across the different tourism sites in the country, namely Donsol, Oslob, Southern Leyte and Palawan. We have also been studying turtle, manta rays, and different marine ecosystems in different parts of the Philippines for many years.
Our primary objective is the conservation of marine biodiversity in the Philippines. Using proven and novel scientific data collection methods, we research the abundance and habitats of cetaceans, whale sharks, turtles, shark and rays in the Philippines. We strive to identify imminent threats facing these species. Our local and international researchers and volunteers work closely with local governments, communities, businesses, and tourists to ensure the conservation of large marine animals through science, education, and advocacy. The scientific data we gather is used to advise local governments on conservation policy and legislation, to counsel local and regional authorities on sustainable tourism, and to empower local stakeholders to better protect the unique biodiversity in Philippine waters.
The Philippines is known as one of the most hospitable countries in the world. LAMAVE's project sites are located in areas that are quite safe and protected. LAMAVE also has safety protocols in place and works very closely with the local communities to ensure the safety of those working on projects.
LAMAVE is made up of a diverse group of researchers from all over the world and also has a significant number of Filipino researchers. The organisation also takes on volunteers from across the globe. These volunteers contribute to the organisation's research and conservation work. We look for volunteers who are passionate about marine conservation, enjoy doing research and conservation work, work well with a diverse team, and love taking on challenges and learning opportunities.
As a volunteer in LAMAVE, you will get the opportunity to learn from great marine conservationists, gain field experience in marine research work, and live in a new, exotic place with charming communities. You get firsthand experience in various marine research methodologies. You will swim with whale sharks, turtles, and/or manta rays. You will learn a lot about working with local communities and other stakeholders on marine conservation.
