Background
With almost 1000 kms of Mediterranean coastline, Spain has a rich marine biodiversity and amazing coastal lifestyle to look after. However, with increased tourism, but lesser awareness on ethical traveling, preservation of natural habitats becomes utmost important. The Marine Conservation Program in Spain is an effort towards keeping the coastal areas clean and safe for aquatic lives to survive.
The project
Located in a traditional fishing town called Denia, 100 kms to south of Valencia and home of the Marine Reserve in the Cape of San Antonio, this marine conservation program is a sincere initiative to maintain and nullify the harsh effect of increased tourism on the environment. Volunteers participating in these projects will learn new skills and contribute to minimize the adverse environmental impact of their travel and get involved in important conservation and research programs.
Volunteer work
Some of the main volunteer tasks under this program includes;
Diving
One does not need to be a licensed diver, but should know how to swim. Depending on the weather conditions, work during the week will combine both water and coastal activities. All necessary equipment will be provided to the volunteers on the days when underwater tasks are to be done. For those, who are looking for proper diving classes, it can be arranged as well on an additional cost.
Continue the conservation work from where our previous volunteers left it, and contribute your time and efforts to keep the coastal areas clean, as well as make sure that the aquatic wildlife gets a livable habitat.
A typical volunteer life under this project is as described below:
Spain is one country where you don't have to search for things to do; they come to you automatically. Depending on your project placement, you will get evenings and the weekends free, to travel and explore the places.
In the evenings, volunteers usually get together and go out for social gatherings. Weekends are free for the volunteers and you can go for short weekend trips. In Spain, you’ll see a magnitude of interesting sights. Visit the artistic Barcelona, the grandiose Royal Palace in Madrid, the imposing Catedral de la Almudena, the golden triangle of museums, Mezquita of Cordoba Ancient streets and many Renaissance, Baroque, Gothic or Romanesque monuments. Trust us, you will not get enough of the Spanish cities!
The total cost for the program includes:
Volunteers are provided pickup from the Valencia or Alicante Airport. Each applicant must mention their flight details in their application, so that the local coordinator in Valencia be informed about their arrival dates and timings; in order to arrange airport pickup on time. Participants need to arrive at the airport before 10pm.
Volunteer Accommodation is provided in a single/double room in a shared apartment. Accommodation is very comfortable with good facilities available (please see pics).
