Nowadays, medical facilities and services in
Cambodia do not meet international standards. Volunteering in Cambodia is an
excellent way to become involved in some of the poorest medical institutions in
the developing world. Cambodia has a limited number of internationally-run
hospitals that can provide basic medical care and stabilization. Volunteers
will work in one of the state hospitals in the city. This program is suitable for pre-meds, nursing students, medical students and professionals.
The hospitals are managed
by the Ministry of Health. The responsibilities at the hospital will vary
depending on your background and previous experience. Volunteers are generally
work alongside the nurses and doctors assisting in treatment of the patients helping with the medical supplies or admin duties. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work in many departments. We will arrange you to the area of your interest and background. Working at the hospital here you will need to bring your own scrubs or we bring you to buy at the orientation day. The scrubs color can be white or light blue.
Every volunteers will get the weekend off. There are many places volunteers can visit at the weekend including the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom, National Museum, Killing Field... Volunteers can also travel by bus to visit many provinces at weekend or during national holiday such as to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, the famous historical place or Sihahouk Vill and Kampot to see beaches. Phnom Penh is a very international city, you will find a lot of western bars, supermarkets offer western articels, and especially the riverside is the spot for diplomats, travellers and international ngo-workers. But of course, you will also find the Cambodian Culture everywhere in the city. Walk around the different markets, try the food of the food stalls at the street or just walk around the streets, there is really always something to explore. Phnom Penh is a good base for trips through the country as it is very central.
