Volunteers help assist in the 3 aspects of the Mama Cocha centre - the nursery, the therapy centre and our after-school care programme for children with special needs.

Project Details

The Mama Cocha Centre provides therapy and support for children in the community of Los Organos, comprised of a nursery, therapy centre and after-school care program.

The Mama Cocha Centre was established in 2008 and is based in the small fishing village of Los Organos in the north of Peru, located a 15minute drive from the thriving surf destination of Mancora.

Los Organos is in an incredibly poor area of the country. The Mama Cocha center provides much-needed child support for working parents who otherwise would not be able to afford childcare.

Our center here is comprised of a nursery for children under 5, some of whom have learning difficulties and special needs, a therapy center where our therapist treats children in attendance at the Mama Cocha projects and also those who live in the local community and cannot afford private healthcare. We also provide after-school care for children with disabilities and special needs who need somewhere safe to come in the afternoons whilst their parents are at work.

The children who come to the after-school project are provided with a varied schedule that provides a balance of play and learning. We run workshops in arts & crafts, gardening, cookery, yoga, dance, do a homework club and also have a fantastic outdoor children’s play area with climbing frame and swings and open space for running around and playing games. Visiting groups and volunteers to the projects here often take the children out on an outing to the nearby beach for a paddle and outdoor games.

Social Impact

Having a child with a disability or special needs sadly is still considered a very negative thing in certain areas of the country and it is important we continue to provide a safe space for the children who are supported by our centre. There are very few places that provide such services in this particular area of Peru and it really does provide vital help and support for the families we work with here. Between the children cared for and given an education at the nursery, the children given therapy at our centre and the children provided for in our after-school programme, Kiya helps support a large number of families living in poverty in the local community.

Kiya also helps provide jobs in a community where work opportunities can be scarce. We employ a dedicated staff team to run our projects which consists of a House Mum; Teaching and support staff in the nursery; Speech and Physiotherapist; Psychologist; Social Worker and a watchman. They are all local professionals who are working unbelievably hard and making a huge difference to young people’s lives. There is also a Project Director who oversees the Centre and who has been working with us for 12 years now.
