Voluntouring Africa

15 Days Wildlife Conservation Road Trip

Marloth Park, South Africa show on map

Working on 2 wildlife NGOs, while traveling through two South African provinces Mpumalanga (Marloth Park) and Natal (Durban) having an adventure road trip

Marloth Park, Mpumalanga, on the banks of the Crocodile River and bordering the Kruger National Park. Here we'll work with the Marloth Wildlife Fund and the Wildlife Task Force while you live in an area that is full of free roaming wild animals. Hear the lions roar at night and hand feed the kudu and zebra from your accommodation. We'll go searching for the Big 5 in the Kruger National Park.

The Marloth Wildlife Fund in Marloth Park is a registered Non-profit Organisation (Reg No: 071-250-NPO) set up for the direct benefit of the wildlife within Marloth Park, a nature conservation area on the Southern border of the Kruger National Park. Marloth Park boasts four of the “Big Five” with the exception of elephant Buffalo, rhino and lion are confined to Marloth game reserve "Lionspruit"; the rest of the game such as kudu, zebra, giraffe, blue wildebeest, nyala, impala, warthog, ostrich, baboon, blue velvet, banded mongoose and others aren't restricted by fences and roam freely between the units.  There is a strict curfew in place in Marloth Park and no walking around between the hours of 18h00 and 06h00 is allowed for safety reasons.

  • Ongoing projects include;
  • Litter management
  • Recycling plant
  • Game counts
  • Snare sweeps
  • Wild feeding scheme
  • Alien plant eradication

From Mpumalanga we make our way down to the coast through Swaziland.  Swaziland is one of the smallest countries in Africa as well as the smaller Monarchy in the world.  Your passport is needed (an extra African stamp!) and most European countries are visa exempt.  We will give you more visa information with your enquiry.

We take a days break down the coast in the little town of St Lucia, situated in the wetlands park and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ending up in Durban we will work with CROW, the oldest and most respected animal rehabilitation centre in KZN.  We will stay in the vibey Durban North area where your nights as well as your days can be taken up with exciting things to do!   We go for a full day to explore the Oribi Gorge and maybe be brave enough to jump from the highest gorge swing in the world!

Founded 35 years ago, CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) was one of South Africa’s first dedicated wildlife rehabilitation centres. Today, CROW is still KwaZulu-Natal’s only registered wildlife rehabilitation centre dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of all indigenous wildlife found in KwaZulu-Natal.

CROW provides an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime volunteering experience where volunteers not only learn about local wildlife rehabilitation and conservation with all its challenges and complexities, but also work alongside their team on a daily basis assisting with wildlife rescues and releases and taking care of the 300-400 patients that are housed at their centre at any given time.

Typical day

Every day is different while volunteering with Voluntouring Africa as you will be volunteering on two separate projects while touring and having an adventure on your days off. 4 days of every project will dedicated to the project with hands on help of anything that may be needed at that time as well as project specific duties.

All of our project require some physical exertion for the day and close proximity to wild animals.
Marloth Park Wildlife Fund: Because of the nature of the work in Marloth you never know what might be around the corner, from a late night call out for help with an injured animal, having to help in the rehabilitation centre or doing a snare sweep to help with our anti poaching initiative.
Volunteering at Marloth has no set itinerary to follow as your help will be needed for different projects depending on the time of the year, the season and circumstances when you arrive.

You will be expected to do work both in the park as well as in Lionspruit Reserve where the lions, buffalo and rhino are kept within Marloth Park

Some of the projects that will be required to help with are:

  • The bush rehabilitation project
  • Seed bombing - creating of seed bombs
  • Litter management
  • Recycling Centre
  • Animal feeding stations
  • Anti poaching snare sweeps
CROW: Since its inception, volunteers have been an integral part of our organisation. Feeding and caring for 300-400 animals on a daily basis is no small task, which is why CROW welcomes the skills, experience and enthusiasm of both local and international volunteers at its centre.  You'll assist with rescues and releases and the daily undertaking of caring for over 300 residents daily from food preparation to enclosure maintenance.

The rest of your days will be spent doing a number of included activities and adventures:  All of the activities are inclusive of all transport, included activities entrance fees, all conservation fees, full time coordinator, outsourced guide at activity.
