Adult Teaching Assistant

Assist adults at this training center with English lessons, music, computer classes and more by working together with local staff on Zanzibar.

About the Program

Education is an ongoing challenge on Zanzibar and keeping up with modern times a challenge in most schools. Few people receive up to date computer training or are being taught English on a professional level in the existing school system. The English taught at the primary and secondary schools is often very basic as the teachers themselves have limited English skills.

With tourism being the fastest growing source of work and income for Zanzibaris, the skill to speak proper English can make a huge difference to find paid work. More and more people see the need to improve their English skills but also their computer skills or perhaps see a future in making, recording and producing music.

The Adult Education center has 200+ students a year partaking in courses such as; English Language, Computer courses (basic and advanced), Music courses (piano, guitar), Music Producing courses and has new plans to add Tourism courses and Videography, Tour guide, and Secondary studies e.g Commerce, Bookkeeping, Math and English.

The center uses facilities in a building in one of the suburbs of Stone Town where the team of 5 teachers, 2 producers and 3 supporting admin staff provide the variety of courses to students in the age group of 18-50 years. The facilities include 4 classrooms, a computer lab with 10 computers and a state of the art recording studio.

Under the guidance of local principal Musa there is a clear vision to grow the center and provide services to a larger group of people and to increase their variety of courses and classes.
