Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala show on map

Agency | Do Guatemala

This project supports children who work and live in extreme poverty and/or in risk to get on the streets. Every afternoon, about 70-80 kids come to the project. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Singles
Couples
Families
Groups
50+

This project supports a specific neighborhood of Quetzaltenango, named Las Rosas. The project is located here, it´s a 10-minute busride from teh city center of Quetzaltenango. The children all live close to the project, and walk there. The neighborhood benefits from the project in different ways.

In January 2018, the project opened up a Community Lunch Room where 50 children between the ages of 5-14 from the Las Rosas community come to eat a nutritious lunch 4 times a week; from Monday to Thursday.  This project was developed to address the extensive problems of malnutrition among the children that participate the after school activities. A typical lunch could be rice with chicken and vegetables accompanied by a fresh fruit drink. Volunteers are needed with serving lunch to the children, and help them with their meal and the cleanup.

After lunch, there is some free time, most children make their homework in this time. Volunteers are welcome to help with the homework supervision and help. After that, the activities program starts. Every Monday through Thursday, from 2 pm to 4:30 pm, we open our doors to the kids in the community, offering activities such as:

- Arts and crafts, which includes drawing, painting, and handicrafts;
- Sports and dance, which includes football, basketball, baseball and zumba; and
- Four-day workshops, which typically involves more complicated crafting projects, such as paper mache animals or dream catchers.

Every afternoon, about 70-80 kids come to the project, all aged between 6 and 14 years old.

Do Guatemala takes care of our volunteers fulltime, however, we are not present at the volunteer project. Upon arrival, we pick you up personally from the busstation, and then we provide a detailed orientation at our office, about what you can expect from the volunteer project, host family and Spanish lessons. We also give you tips on how to get around in Xela, including a map. We bring you personally to the host family and make sure you´re all good.

The next day we´ll meet again, and then we´ll join you to the volunteer project. We´ll introduce you to the local staff, and stay around for a bit until we see that you kind of mixed in.

During your time in Xela, we´ll visit you at the project (or Spanish lessons) apprx. once a week. Besides that, our office is open for you to visit us and simply come tell us about your day, or ask questions. We are also 24/7 available on the phone or Whatsapp for urgent matters. You´ll be well taken care of!

Typical day

Volunteers are helpful in many ways, and there are usually several volunteers active at the project, so you can work together. Local staff is present too, to oversee the activities and coordinate everything.

Volunteers can help out at the lunchroom, and/or the after school activities.

Basically, the following schedules are available:
10:00am – 3:00pm: lunchroom assistance
10:00am – 5:00pm: lunchroom and afterschool program
12:30pm – 5:00pm: end of lunch, homework and afterschool program
2:00pm - 5:00pm: afterschool program

During the afterschool program, volunteers assist the children in the activities planned by the team, so help the children execute their work, supervise them, teach them to behave, and play with them. Volunteers are also more than welcome to plan and execute their own recreational activity in the area or sports, games or handicrafts.

We are interested in receiving proactive and enthousiastic volunteers who love working with kids. It´s a lot of fun with 70-80 kids, but it can also be hectic, so don´t be shy! Speaking basic Spanish is very helpful, so that you can explain the activities and help the kids.
You will be rewarded with a lot of smiles and hugs!

Details on Arrival

It would be most convenient to arrive in Quetzaltenango on Sunday, so that you can start your program on a Monday. However, we can be flexible if necessary.

Volunteers don´t need to bring special equipment or supplies. However, donations are greatly appreciated! Such as supplies for arts and crafts, school supplies, etcetera. You can contact us to inquire about the current needs.

In December, it´s school holiday in Guatemala, so the project will be closed.

Free-time activities

Guatemala offers many free time activities! You can do a lot of hiking to one of the many volcanoes near the city (Santa Maria, Santiaguito, Tajumulco, Chicabal). You can also choose for a cultural tour to indigenous Mayan villages, and visit the hot springs Fuentes Georginas, which are hot springs with volcanic water, located in a beautiful cloud forest.
