After School Teacher

The organization is based in Ghana and provides help and guidance for underprivileged children in Ghana by providing educational opportunities through play.

Teaching at the Play and Learn Foundation

Play and Learn Foundation seeks to engage children who don’t have access to a quality education. The Foundation seeks to help  both boys and girls gain access to a  good education through the after school program. A normal session at Play and Learn will entail an academic session with volunteers from universities both national and international, communities, companies, NGOs and sympathisers. The educational curriculum  includes reading and analytical skills, creative writing, english, mathematics, science and other areas relevant to their studies in school. Mentoring, guidance and career counselling programs to also help the kids find out their expertise in order to follow their dreams. Hence Play and Learn will give these boys and girls the opportunities to thrive and survive in the harsh conditions presented to them through no fault of theirs.

Social Networking

Cultural and educational tours are organised for the kids to expose them to parts of their country they never knew they existed. The aim of the Foundation is to socialise these children with all walks of life both professionally and culturally through trips, fun fares and inter school football tournaments. This social networking will also help expose the kids and help create friendships that will aid in their development.

Other Tasks
Lastly, volunteers with extra skills and experiences can help with other administrative work. These includes writing of grant proposals, presentations of the Play and Learn project to Corporate Companies, International Organisations,Philanthropists and other Ngo’s for sponsorships, partnerships and donations, organisation of events to create awareness about the organisation and also fun stuff for the children to enjoy and other specific projects.

Typical day

Play and Learn Foundation believes that a strong basic education and the development of  soft skills, not necessarily taught in Ghanaian basic schools, will empower children from deprived communities to become leaders and relevant to the country as a whole.

Hence activities scheduled are all geared towards achieving these objectives. Volunteer teachers have three days in the week (Usually Mondays,Tuesdays and Fridays)to meet the designated kids they are supposed to tutor after school from 3pm to 5.30pm. Every semester has a curriculum in English, Math and Science that they are to follow. Learning takes place usually in an open space which is usually the football field. This is to create a different learning environment since they have been in school more than half of the day.

Learning activities are supposed to be fun sessions, where lessons are taught through games, debates, creative and innovative activities that triggers brainstorming, curiosity and critical thinking within the children. The children trickle down from their homes and are usually all seated and ready to learn by 3.15pm. Volunteers are however given the independence to come up with their own unique ways of delivering their planned lessons. Also, the ratio of children to each teacher ranges from 1:5 to 1: 8. This allows the volunteer teacher to get to know the strength, weaknesses and uniqueness of each kid.

At the end of each volunteering period, the teachers are required to write a paper on their experience with the organization and the children, the pros, cons and suggestions that will help in making the organization more successful in its service delivery.
