Animal Rescue Center

Xela, Guatemala

Help take care of rescued animals in Guatemala. Take dogs for walks and administer medicine to animals that need your help!

The Project

In this project, you will help find street animals a new home. The animal shelter is located in Quetzaltenango (also known under the indigenous name Xela). It is the second largest city in Guatemala and is located in the picturesque highlands at 2,300 meters above sea level.

As a volunteer, you will be working with a group of people dedicated to rescue and rehabilitation of abandoned and neglected animals. The main goal of the project is to provide animals with food and any medical care or rehabilitation they need. The project also aims to find the animals a new home. Without this organization, dogs would be living in unbearable conditions on the streets or on chains in backyards.

In addition, the organization provides educational workshops for pet owners tells them what their responsibilities are when owning a pet. As part of the project, there is a unit that carry out more activities each year that aim to protect and rescue animals. Currently, there are around 35 dogs at the shelter (number changes throughout the year).

Your Tasks

Most of the animals at the shelters are sick and victims of abuse. In some cases, they are female dogs with pups. When they arrive at the shelter, the animals are given the care they need and opportunities to find a new home.

On a typical work day, your tasks will include:

  • Feeding the animals
  • Administering medicine
  • Bathing and brushing the animals
  • Helping to administer vaccines
  • Taking the dogs for walks
  • Playing with dogs

Free-time activities
