Animal Rescue in the Amazon

Help to take care of rescued animals at a center in the Amazon Jungle! Feed monkeys, parrots, and coatis!

The Project

The Rainforest Rescue Center is located about 7 hours from Quito, in the small colonial town of Puyo. The center is home to about 70 animals that have been victims of illegal animal trafficking or that were saved from dangerous conditions. The rescued animals are rehabilitated and, in the best case scenario, released back to their natural habitat.

There are many different animals that are taken care of at the center, such as Squirrel Monkeys, Woolly Monkeys, Titi Monkeys, and Capuchin Monkeys. There are also Peccaries (musk-hog) and carnivores like Coatis, Tayra, and Kinkajou, tortoises, snakes, turkeys, and many species of parrots. With its breathtaking panorama of the Amazon jungle, the center is the perfect place to have an unforgettable experience in Ecuador.

At the local village, El Triunfo (15 minutes by bus from the center), you can find small shops and a couple of small, local bars. Restaurants, supermarkets, and internet, are only available in Puyo.

Your Tasks

As a volunteer at the rescue center, you will support the protection and conservation of wild animals. Your work will include the following tasks:

  • Cleaning cages and enclosures
  • Feeding the animals on a daily basis
  • Construction and maintenance of cages and enclosures
  • Observing the behavior of animals
  • Making toys for the animals and observe any benefits
  • Playing with the animals to relieve their boredom

If all this sounds great for you, don't hesitate to participate in this project. Your personal ideas, skill, and talents that could help contribute to this project are very welcome. The more time and effort you are willing to put into this project, the more you will get back in return! From Monday to Friday, your work day starts at 8:00 am and goes until 12:00 pm. After your lunch break, you will go back to work from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
