Assist doctors and nurses (if you have medical background), Activities with patients (no medical background)
In Ecuador the health service is split up into private and public health care, private hospitals are very well equipped in Ecuador while public hospitals lack beds, staff and resources to give a good standard of medical care to the population, this is why volunteers are so vital to these hospitals.
The project is mainly aimed at medical students and nurses with experience, but people without experience are welcome too, but they are not entrusted with medical care, they take care of the patients by doing activites and talking to them.
On your first couple of days starting at the hospital you will recieve an orientation, which includes a tour of the hospital, visiting all the areas and meeting the staff. When at the hospital you can choose in which area(s) you would like to work in, you will then accompany your doctor or nurse and look at the different procedures in this area.
Day to day taks will depend on experience, with some experience you will take blood pressure and assist nurses on treatments. Medical students or doctors will observe surgeries and assist in treatments while people with no healthcare background will go on walk with patients and play games.
You can choose if you want to work Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 12:30 or 2:00 pm until 5:30 pm (subject to changes) and you will have weekends off.
