The Mighty Roar

Assistant in the Local Orphanage

Prasat Balong District, Cambodia show on map
Come to Cambodia and make a difference in the lives of orphaned children. Your time and effort will immediately help the centre. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

If you enjoy working with children, then this is a fantastic opportunity for you. Your primary role will be to interact and engage with the children and your time could be spent playing games, teaching English, helping with hygiene, arts and crafts and so much more!

Our community run orphanage was founded back in 2012 after the Khmer Rouge reign left many children without parents. The centre aims to provide care, education, training and accommodation to enhance the children’s progress and opportunities.

Siem reap is one of the poorest areas in Cambodia with over 75% of the population living in severe poverty. Currently, the orphanage is home to 20 children aged between 2 and 16, with a further 60 children attending during the day, where just 2 local staff carry out all daily operations; including cleaning, cooking and teaching.

Did you know that almost 1 in 10 children are orphans? This is a serious issue within Cambodia that everyone is working hard to rectify, including the government and many local organisations.

Government facilities are scarce and with the lack of resources and funding available, many children are not receiving the sufficient level of care and support they need.

By volunteering, you will be able to give the love, care and attention the children so desperately need and crave so that they can pursue as normal a childhood as possible.

Typical day

As the children live on site, you will get to spend your full day with these amazing people! If you are feeling brave, you are more than welcome to join one of our teaching classes where you can assist other volunteers at the school.

During your time at the orphanage, your main role will be to interact and care for the children. You will have the opportunity to do many activities, games and generally have fun! On a normal day, you could get involved with the following:

  • Provide informal teaching to improve their English
  • Help with homework to ensure it’s completed correctly and on time
  • Play sports and games
  • Get creative with arts and craft or even sing and play music
  • Help and teach personal hygiene
  • Assist with general tasks such as washing clothes and preparing meals

It is important to note that not all of the children are at the orphanage because they have lost their parents. Some have been taken into care because they have come from abusive backgrounds or their families could not afford to support them.

Fees include registration fee, accommodation, some meals and the airport pick up

Airport Pickup at Siem Reap International Airport

You should arrive into Siem Reap International Airport (REP) on your selected Saturday start date.

Please ensure your flight lands before 20:00pm so the pickup fee is included.

The programme ends on the Saturday of your final week and you should depart the accommodation and continue on your onwards journey.

On your last day you will need to travel back to the airport for your onwards journey. The return transfer is not included within the programme fee but our local team can arrange this for you.

Although the accommodation is basic, it is very comfortable and being located next to our community school you will get to experience life as a true local. Each bedroom has single beds with up to 2 other volunteers per room. You are provided with mosquito nets, bedding and a much needed fan.

The western style bathrooms are shared and the water is cold – not that that is a problem as Cambodia is hot and humid all year round!

Dorm Room
Food & Beverages

Breakfast and dinner are provided at the volunteer house from Monday to Friday and are included within the programme fee. You will need to purchase your own lunch, which we advise you to budget around £2 per day. Volunteers usually head into town or the local market to stock up on food supplies.

Meals are aimed to be as varied as possible across the week and you can expect some of the following meals:
