The Mighty Roar

Assistant of childcare

District Kangra, India show on map
This rewarding and important role will see you provide the children with the proper care, love and attention they so desperately need. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

This is your opportunity to be steeped in the unique Indian and Tibetan culture, where you are surrounded by lush green tea plantations and can enjoy picture-perfect views of the majestic snow-capped Himalayan Mountains.

Play a significant role by making a vital contribution to their daily lives. You will mainly be working with toddlers and infants in day care centres or Anganwadis (as they are locally called) located around the rural town of Palampur.

Due to wide spread poverty, most families are unable to look after their children. As a result of this, children are sent to local day care centres where staff and volunteers take over responsibility to care for them.

The majority of staff are not adequately educated and lack the resources to properly take care of the children. You will help with daily jobs such as feeding, cleaning, clothing, teaching, playing games and most importantly, showering them with your love!

Since the beginning of this praise-worthy programme, there has been a gradual change and development in the running of the day care centres. Volunteers have played a big role in this positive change, working with the children to increase their welfare by lending a helping and caring hand, helping with education and also adding a vibrancy to the entire atmosphere.

We need you to help continue this success where you will be able to contribute in your own way.

The day care centres do not have adequate materials and supplies, so you are more than welcome to bring any resources you believe will be useful. The children, staff and local team all appreciate anything you can donate, but most importantly your time and dedication is most needed.

Typical day

Working in the day care centres, there is one thing you can be sure of – no two days will ever be the same! Spending your days with the children is such a rewarding experience where you will make a special bond with them, it will be very hard to say goodbye!

You will generally be getting to the day care centre around 09:00 and leave at 16:00 stopping for a lunch break. There are so many tasks that you will be involved in, some include:

  • Create a vibrant and playful environment through interactive games and fun activities
  • Maintain attendance sheets to ensure the children are all present
  • Keeping parents informed about the activities their children are doing
  • Help prepare and serve nutritious meals
  • Have fun and get colourful with arts and crafts activities
  • Decorate and paint the day care centres to make them more attractive
  • Encourage more children to attend
