Construction of houses for local families with activities such as: balancing ground, erecting walls, construction of roofs
Antigua suffers from extreme poverty, many families have no home to shelter themselves or their children, with most families living in poorly assembled shacks consisting of cardboard, sheet metal and trash. The shacks only consist of one room, where the families lives, eats and sleeps in.
This project contains a lot of physical work so you should not shy away from hard work and being involved in a project straight away. The main objective of this project is to build new homes and improve existing ones for families living in poverty.
The families who are part of this project must be in possesion of the land the house is build on, so the family's situation will be analyzed, taking into account the socio-economic aspects.
Houses usually take around 7 to 10 days to build, there are small houses around 30 square metres, but these houses are a major improvement on the current situation of the family. This experience is very emotional for the families and very satisfying for the volunteers as they get to witness the change in peoples lives.
On a typical working day your tasks will include:
During the process you will get to know the family as you work together side by side. You will also be part of building the house and watching the families move in which is a very rewarding experience.
In your spare time there are many different activities to choose from in Antigua such as a variety of different sports like football (soccer), many volunteers also go for hikes around Antigua and look at its its beautiful colonial buildings. There are also many different bars where volunteers can go to socialize.
In this project volunteers will stay with host families. This will allow you to indulge in the culture getting to know traditional ways, you will have a private bedroom but shared bathroom and living areas.
