Contribute to build decent homes to underprivileged families in Portugal. Become a volunteer in construction!

Volunteer in Lisbon Renovating Houses and transform the lifes of families in need

In Portugal, over two million people are in danger of living in poverty, including 500 thousand children and their families. This program directly helps these families by giving them a decent home. We mobilize national and international volunteers to rebuild and repair their houses so they have a healthier and happier place to live. The volunteers will have the opportunity to be integrated into a team of volunteers from all over the world that have a common mission. Painting doors, repairing the rooms’ floor or fixing the bathroom wall will be part of your daily tasks. You don’t have to be an expert in construction as there will always be a supervisor explaining how to perform the tasks and making sure everything you do is correct. The results of your work are tangible and truly meaningful from day one and the smiles on the family faces when moving in again are priceless.

Program Highlights

1. Explore the incredible Portuguese culture by working side by side with locals in a volunteering project.

2. Travel like a local, not like a tourist.

3. Have an independent experience that allows participants to gain leadership, career, and educational experiences.

4. Make a real and meaningful positive impact on the communities.

5. Meet people from different cultures and work as a team.

Discover Lisbon beyond its touristic sites

This is an experience aiming to show travellers the true spirit of the Portuguese capital. Walk around the narrow streets of the old centre, visit authentic handicraft shops and taste the typical dishes which our grandmothers used to prepare. You also get the opportunity to see the hidden side of the city by volunteering in local social associations. Understand how people live by participating in volunteering activities and you will go back home with a totally unforgettable experience.

Your Tasks

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to be integrated into a team of volunteers from all over the world that have a common mission: contribute to allow everyone to have a home. After the initial orientation, you will have afternoon or evening shift at your placement and will work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day. Your tasks may include among others:

  • Painting a door or a wall
  • repairing a room floor
  • fixing the bathroom wall

The results of your work are tangible and truly meaningful from day one but the smiles on the families’ face when moving in are priceless.

Accommodation

Impact House has the capacity to accommodate up to 41 conscious travelers who want to visit Lisbon in a different way. With both dormitories and private rooms, any traveler can choose to have a more responsible stay in Portugal.

There are various common areas such as dining room, living room, fully-equipped kitchen, two balconies with sofas and hammocks and a big terrace to relax or participate in our super interesting events calendar. We have free Yoga classes three times a week!

Located in a typical Lisbon neighborhood, Estrela, Impact House is just 20 minutes away from the downtown. You can find local shops, traditional restaurants, the stunning Estrela garden, supermarkets, ATMs and most utilities you will need just around the corner. The Hostel is surrounded by several connecting options to the city center, such as the historical 28-Tram (20 minutes away from the center), buses (20 minutes away from the center), and the Alcântara train station that leads you to Lisbon or Cascais (25 walking distance from the hostel). The airport is just 8,2 kms away.

But what is really unique about us is our sustainability concept.

We developed innovative projects based on circular economy and in partnership with local non-profit partners. These projects are integrated in the very basis of the way the hostel works. Some examples are the compensation of 100% of its CO2 emissions; the upcycling and wooden waste usage as furniture of the room; the social and sustainable shop; the ecologic and biodegradable cleaning projects; the art gallery for disabled and changemaker artists; the vertical garden; the buying in bulk policy or the almost closed food and waste cycles.

And you can also be part of it! Donate something, volunteer your time, learn new skills on our zero waste workshops, compensate your flight emissions, bike to transform plastic into new products among many other opportunities!
