Business, Marketing and Practical Skills Supporter

Kathmandu, Nepal

Volunteer with a social enterprise helping to support and train local people, particularly women, helping them develop the skills to run successful businesses

This program works to support a social enterprise in the Patan district of Kathmandu.  The local people who manage this project welcome volunteers with the following areas of expertise:

  • business skills
  • use of social and digital media
  • marketing and advertising
  • design of promotional materials
  • product designers
  • wood turners
  • baristas
Karma Coffee is the first coffee boutique in Nepal.  It opened it 2012 as a creative place where people can not only have a good cup of coffee but where they can learn, interact, get inspired and do good things.  They sell Fairtrade coffee sourced locally from the Himalayas and also a range of locally produced accessories, all linked in some way to coffee.  Everything at Karma Coffee is produced locally, with a strong focus on creating skills-training and employment opportunities for local people,  The coffee farmers are all small co-operatives or independent farmers from the mid-hill region of Nepal.  Every stage of the coffee production, from the farmers to the women who sort the beans to the roasting, grinding and packaging is done by carefully selected producers who give employment to local people, mainly women.  Every by-product of the coffee-making process is used to make innovative and beautiful products, ranging from lampshades to honey to cosmetics, which are all produced by local artisans.  in addition there is a strong emphasis on recycling, with all furniture and soft furnishings made from locally sourced recycled materials.  As well as providing orders for local farmers and artisans, Karma Coffee provides direct employment and training opportunities, with a particular emphasis on providing training for women in skills not usually available to them such as wood turning.  Expansion plans for the training program involve the creation of a vocational training centre.

Volunteers placed on this program can help in a variety of ways depending on their skills and experience, and each volunteer will have an individual placement outline which utilizes their expertise to meet local needs.  So for example a volunteer with experience in business or finance might help produce long-term expansion plans; a volunteer skilled in marketing might help train staff in advertising methods using social and digital media, and a volunteer with practical skills might help train with the skills-training program.  Whatever their expertise, a volunteer can be sure their placement outline will link them up with a local person able to utilize these skills on this skills-sharing program.  Each volunteer's placement will involve them working closely with this local person or people and sharing skills with them as they go about their day.

Typical day

Every volunteer's day will be different, depending on their individual placement outline and the nature of the work they are doing.  Full details will be provided as part of the preparation process.  However, typically a volunteer will work from about 9.00 - 16.00.  They will accompany the person who they have been matched with for their placement as they go about their working day, taking every opportunity to share skills with them.

Details on Arrival

Volunteers may join this program at any time throughout the year.

Free-time activities

Volunteers will be staying in Patan, a part of Nepal with many shops and restaurants and plenty to do.  It is not far from the World Heritage Patan Durbar Square, and there are many cultural buildings to visit.  It is also easy to arrange transport to other areas of the city, so the heritage sites and tourist facilities of the busy city of Kathmandu are easily accessible.

Our local partners in Kathmandu can help volunteers make arrangements to travel more widely in Nepal at weekends or after their placement has finished, so hikes into the mountains are to be recommended.
