Career Mentor

Share your professional skills and knowledge and inspire different career paths for the students who are between 13 and 18 years old.

The Program

This program aims to train the students in new skills, to broaden their career options and to help the monastery with the teaching. You can teach practical skills such as hairdressing, cooking, tailoring, carpentry, IT skills or anything else you can teach in a workshop which may help their future.

This will be a life-changing experience for both you and the students - you can inspire them through an active workshop, share your practical and theoretical experience and confidently lead the group. The students may choose to further their studies and find a job related to the workshop.

Mandalay is also the economic hub of Upper Myanmar and it is considered the centre of Burmese culture. The monastery school is situated in Nanshe, a residential suburb in Northeast Mandalay. The school was founded in 1993 by two monks whose aim was to support children from poor families as well as orphans. Today, the school teaches over 6,000 students from ages 7-18 and different religious backgrounds including Muslims and Hindus. The monastery is also the home to over 1,000 people - from monks to orphans.

The Location

Myanmar or Burma was not a touristic destination for a long time; however, recently it has gained popularity among tourists. And although many areas of the country are still closed to foreigners, most major cities and attractions are waiting to be explored. This is a country, which has preserved its traditions and culture and is a wonderful authentic place to discover. Influenced deeply by the most prevalent religion, Buddhism, as well as by colonisation, Myanmar has ties with its neighbouring countries - India, China and Thailand, and many ethnic minorities. Mandalay, the second-largest city and the last royal capital of the country, is a favourite destination for its great number of attractions.

Free-time activities

The weekends are off to explore the country and its culture. It is important to understand that Myanmar is a country that has very recently opened its doors to visitors and its infrastructure is slowly being built. The roads have greatly improved in recent years, but it still takes quite a while to travel by land. It is also important to keep in mind that some areas in Myanmar are closed to tourists or they might require a special permit to be accessed. However, it is possible to move around Myanmar independently via plane, bus, train and even boat.
