Come to Mexico to care for children from low-socioeconomic, single-parent families. Help to feed, educate, clean and play with Mexican children.
During a volunteer's stay with us, they are assigned to a particular area to help at the daycare in one of our nine classrooms. Helping includes: playing with children, arts/crafts, helping feed and changing babies' clothes, field trips, etc. Occasionally volunteers have the opportunity to help with local fundraising events by conducting outreach and assisting with set-up and clean-up.
Since it is sometimes challenging to work with young children, it is very important for volunteers who are considering this experience to have the love, creativity, energy, and willingness to work with infants and pre-school children. We also strongly recommend that volunteers have studied or demonstrate an interest in studying Spanish prior to and during their time with us. That way, volunteers can be the most useful in the classroom and have the most satisfying experience possible.
Full-time volunteers are requested to work at the daycare Monday through Friday from 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Therefore, volunteers are free weekdays in the afternoon and on weekends.
San Miguel de Allende is located in the heart of Mexico. In their free time, volunteers often explore the colonial streets, the artisan market and the cultural spaces and museums. San Miguel celebrates many Mexican traditions and almost every weekend there is another parade, dance or event to attend. Other popular activities in San Miguel include quad bike tours, ranch tours, horse riding trips, swimming at the hot springs etc. Volunteers can take weekend trips to nearby cities (such as Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Queretaro, Mexico City).
If you would like, you can organise to be picked up from the airport closest to San Miguel de Allende, Aeropuerto del Bajio (BJX). Our director, Miguel, can pick you up at the airport and bring you directly to the Volunteer House. The trip takes about an hour and 15 minutes. If you arrive at a different airport or would prefer another travel option, just communicate with us during the application process and we can direct you towards information about a local shuttle service and the bus system.
We have a Volunteer House close to the day care where our volunteers stay. It is a lovely international environment where volunteers can relax and get to know each other. We ask for a donation of USD$160 per week (or USD$500 per month) to stay in the volunteer house. This includes wifi, hot water, linen, cable television, a daily cleaning service and breakfast and lunch (Monday to Friday).
We include non-vegetarian breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday for all of our volunteers. Volunteers are welcome to eat the wonderful, home-cooked Mexican that we serve in the day care centre.
