This program is run by the local people in the northern cloud forest of Ecuador, and it provides support to the community and the children. The community also runs a Eco-Lodge which is located within the could forest, which is a global hotspot in biodiversity with 1500 species of plants and 390 species of birds situating within the area.
This program is essential to the community, the inhabitants would like to share the beauty of their land to visitors, while also showing them their way of life. The site is located in the small town of Nanegal which is about 2 hours away from Quito, it is easily reached by public busses. The population in this town is around 4,500 people with 2 schools and a daycare centre.
Volunteers on this project will work alongside members of the community. This allows you to make new friends and experience the culture, it also offers you the chance to improve your spanish skills.
The day care center you will be working in aims to provide a safe and caring environment for children, the ages of the children vary from 6 months to 5 years. The center provides breakfast and lunch to the children. The nursery has over 45 children attending, so it is very over crowded with a lack of staff, this is why volunteers are so important for these centres to help out.
Volunteers usually work with just one age group and on a typical day your taks will be to help create and participate in games, assist in educating children, provide personal care to the children by encouraging good hygiene. You will also be expected to help feed younger children on a daily basis.
During your time on the project you will become a role model to the children so your behaivour must lead by example. You will get to see the difference you are making to peoples lives which is very rewarding.
