Childcare Center Assistant

Your work in an orphanage in Haiti will provide these orphaned children with the attention and mental stimulation that all children need to develop healthy social skills

Haiti is a fascinating country in which to volunteer with orphans and disadvantaged children in the Caribbean.
Orphanages in Haiti can take many different shapes and sizes. Many have children as old as 18 and as young as babies. These children are in need of love, care and affection which local staff are often to busy to offer them on an individual basis.
Volunteer work in orphanages in Haiti can make a large impact on both you and the orphans themselves. We recommend going for eight weeks or more if you are doing a project that involves social work. However, some projects can accommodate volunteers for as little as two weeks.

Volunteers work on achieving the goals set out in the Care Management Plan, including running educational games and group activities, and providing emotional support.

Our staff regularly visit host-families, guesthouses, volunteers and placements to ensure everything is running smoothly. We maintain a cycle of monitoring all volunteer accommodation and placements. On arrival, our staff will make a final check that your accommodation and arrangements for your placement are acceptable.

Volunteers are placed with organizations that promote education, vocational training, cultural activities, and general care. There is also a focus on teaching life-skills and trades so that all children can be self-sufficient, and able to attain their basic human rights with dignity. You may be placed with a youth center, orphanage, after school care programs.

Your role will depend on your background and the needs of the organization you are placed with at the time you go abroad. Activities may include caring for orphaned and abandoned children, arranging extra-curricular activities, focusing on education projects for street children, teaching trades, and playing games.

Typical day

As a care volunteer in Haiti, you will have an important role to play in the lives of disadvantaged children. We welcome volunteers of all ages and skill levels, whether you are a gap year student, a career breaker looking to gain some experience in development work, or a trained professional offering us the benefit of your experience. As a volunteer, we only require that you are willing to work hard and are committed to the children in your care.

In many cases, your day will begin early when you will help the children get ready for school. You might have the middle of the day free or you may want to stay on to help local staff with other tasks around the home.

Some care homes are more inclusive in their approach, teaching both life skills and handcrafts to the older children. If you have any skills in art, crafts, sports, or even gardening, you will be a great help in improving their children’s skills and social abilities. Interaction, friendship, and support are the most important things you will need to be able to offer the children we work with.
