Childcare & Development Worker

Granada, Nicaragua show on map

Provide essential support to marginalized young children. Support their social development.

The program

Set in the beautiful city of Granada on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, this important childcare program supports Nicaragua’s impoverished children by giving them a great start to life! Volunteers on this placement will be working at a daycare center with many children, interacting with them and playing an important role in their early development. Volunteering with children in Nicaragua is a fun and rewarding experience that has a positive impact on both the children and the volunteer. As a developing nation with high rates of poverty, any support families receive is appreciated. Granada is a beautiful city, famed for its colonial architecture and its friendly people. Volunteers will spend time in this amazing location, soaking up the culture and sights, all while supporting children in need. For volunteers who love children, teaching and have loads of patience, this program will deliver a wonderful experience.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide essential support to marginalized young children
  • Teach impoverished children important skills such as hygiene practices
  • Improve the future prospects of Nicaraguan children and help them to break the poverty cycle by supplying quality early childhood teaching
  • Expose volunteers, children and their families to different people and cultures

How you can help

Pre-school education provides a foundation for children’s social and educational needs and is an essential building block on which to start their educational journey. For children living in poverty, providing a stable place to thrive is essential for their development, and why this childcare program is so essential. Volunteers will assist in a variety of ways on this program while also getting to experience this wonderful city. Participants will help care for young children from 1 – 5 years of age. They will spend most of their time just getting to know the children and giving them lots of love and attention, while also teaching them education basics. Participants will engage with the children in a variety of activities aimed at building self-esteem, learning, and just having fun. Volunteers supply essential care and attention to the children, allowing the center to provide care for families in need of support.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Planning educational games for the children
  • Helping daycare staff prepare meals for the children
  • Playing and interacting with the children
  • Teaching basic classes to the children, for example, teaching them colors, shapes, numbers

Located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, Granada is home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions. The city’s main plaza, Central Park, is dominated by the colorful, neoclassical facade of the Cathedral of Granada, originally dating to 1583. The Centro Cultural Convento San Francisco nearby is famed for its displays of pre-Columbian statues.

Granada's restaurants have received international recognition by newspapers like the New York Times. In the city of Granada, there are many restaurants to visit and in recent years, the cities evolving culinary scene mixes local and international flavors, as well as supporting farm-to-table sustainability of local growers and producers. Granada's economy continues to grow in big part because it is fast becoming a tourist attraction for its colonial architecture, as well as its ecological beauty and now as a food destination. This is a fantastic place to be a Love Volunteer!
